Abstract

Recessionary pressures, ageing populations and the availability of new technologies are increasing cost pressures on the NHS. To achieve world class cancer care, funding of cancer services needs to increase in the UK. Appropriate funding is an essential component of high quality cancer services, yet significant variations in spending on cancer persist within England. These cannot alone be explained by variations in need-or indeed outcome. A critical task for commissioners is therefore to assess their level of expenditure on cancer services, and identify areas where it may be inappropriately high or low and take action to address this.
