Abstract

This study builds on earlier works of scholarship on the notion of the Ubuntu philosophical world view. Framed within the South African construction industry, this study seeks to relate Ubuntu explicitly to ongoing discourse in relationship management, the objective being to facilitate an understanding of a socially constructed philosophy of relationship management within the South African construction industry. To achieve the research objectives, the study utilises data gathered from a focus group of construction project management professionals registered with the South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions. Data analysis is undertaken using axial coding. De-composing the emergent research themes suggests that it may be premature to demand clearly articulated dimensions and clear expectations from Ubuntu; instead what may be more beneficial to the notion of Ubuntu may be a clearer articulation of its guiding modality.
