Abstract

A typology of applied psychoanalysis is offered as a tool for organizing and promoting efforts to use psychoanalytic concepts and interventions outside the traditional clinical consulting room. A brief review of the history of applied psychoanalysis is followed by the delineation of seven categories of applied psychoanalytic activity: psychoanalytic social advocacy, psychoanalytic social commentary, psychoanalysis in the community, psychoanalysis of the community, psychoanalytic interpretation in the academy, using data to promote social change, and developing the meta-theory of applying psychoanalytic thought.
