Abstract

During preparation of a monograph of the genus Isolepis R. Br. (Muasya & Simpson, in press) we became aware of two species described in Scirpus by Linnaeus (1753) which had not been lectotypified. Scirpus fluitans L. and S. setaceus L. are fairly common and widespread, occurring in temperate to tropical regions of the Old World. Both taxa were transferred to Isolepis by Robert Brown (1810), although the Linnaean binomials continued in use for many years. Over the past 35 years, a narrow circumscription of the genus Scirpus has become widely accepted, with several segregate genera including Isolepis (Wilson 1989, Muasya et al. 2000). Thus in the forthcoming monograph, the taxa will be referred to I. fluitans (L.) R. Br. and I. setacea (L.) R. Br. Appropriate types for the taxa are selected below.
