Abstract

The Brigham Formation was defined by Walcott, who gave as its type locality only the very · generalized location: "West front of the Wasatch Range, northeast of Brigham, Box Elder County, Utah." In 1971 the Brigham was elevated to group rank and defined as comprising a conformable sequence of Precambrian Z and Early Cambrian rocks. Recent detailed mapping of Brigham Group rocks in and near Walcott's type area has shown that these rocks are cut by the Box Elder thrust, a fault that has removed some 1,500-3,300 feet (450-1,000 m) of Precambrian Z rocks. It is now thought that Walcott's probable type section was above the Box Elder thrust and that Walcott's type Brigham can be correlated with essentially all of the Geertsen Canyon Quartzite, an Early Cambrian(?) unit whose type section is near Huntsville, Utah, 16 miles (25 km) southeast of Brigham City
