Abstract

The three syntypes of Elatocladus brevifolia (Fontaine) Bell, a species of fossil conifer foliage from the Early Cretaceous Potomac Group of Virginia, have been reexamined. United States National Museum (USNM) No. 3247 is a faint imprint that is not identifiable to species, while USNM No. 3881 and No. 3883 have different types of epidermal construction indicating that they represent different species. USNM No. 3883 is retained as the lectotype of E. brevifolia, and a new species E. sclerotica is established for USNM No. 3881. The epidermis of E. brevifolia resembles that of E. montanensis Miller et LaPasha, from the Early Cretaceous Kootenai Formation of Montana, and it is also somewhat similar to E. coriaceous Florin, from the Yorkshire Jurassic. Epidermal features of E. sclerotica appear to be unique among conifers.
