Abstract

Two new fluorescent probes HL1 and HL2 based pyridine-derived Schiff-bases have been synthesized and characterized. The structure of HL1 and HL2 were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The probes HL1 and HL2 exhibited “turn-on” fluorescence response toward Al3+ with a color change from colorless to aquamarine. Meanwhile, HL1 and HL2 showed good selective and sensitive to Al3+ with a low detection limit of 3.2 × 10−9 M for HL1 and 2.9 × 10−8 M for HL2, respectively. In addition, the binding stoichiometry ratio, binding mode and sensing mechanism between HL and Al3+ were also investigated by Job plot's analysis, mass spectrometry and 1H NMR titration experiment. Moreover, the sensor HL1 and HL2 were applied for monitoring Al3+ ion in natural water samples.
