Abstract

We have calculated the (p,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) spectra for calcium isotopes based on a two-nucleon pion-production model. In the near-threshold region, the observed selective excitation of high-spin states is well explained. The experimental data are reproduced within a factor of 2--3. In the higher-energy region, our calculation predicts a pronounced selectivity for stretched two-particle--one-hole high-spin states. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
