Abstract

This chapter features two interviews with the Italian filmmaker of The Battle of Algiers about his less-heralded projects. In the first interview, he remembers his controversial casting of a peasant who had never seen a movie in his life to star in Burn! opposite Marlon Brando. He speaks of a movie he wants to make about a priest in World War 2 who falls in love with a young woman. In the second interview, he admits that he can’t find financing for his World War 2 movie. He talks of a TV documentary that he did make, The Battle of Algiers: Gillo Pontecorvo’s Return to Algiers . A highlight of the film is an on-camera argument he has with a young fundamentalist student.
