Abstract

White feathered cormorants were found in two adjacent colonies of common cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo), “Unoyama” and Sugekari, Mihama-cho. OBSERVATION 1: On May 9, 1991, a white chick of the cormorant was observed in a nest on a dead pine at “Unoyama” together with two ordinary chicks in a litter. Parents were also ordinarily feathered. OBSERVATION 2: On April 7, 1992, a white chick of the cormorant was observed in a nest on the eurya at corner of the hill of Sugekari. The other one in the litter of two as well as parents were ordinarily feathered. Both of them showed entirely white plumages, the yellow upper beak, the yellow shanks and toes with white nails. Eyes were red in color and dully brightened. These external features indicate that they are totally devoid of melanin pigments and complete albinism might be suggested.
