Abstract

Harsh words were uttered by Frank Chin and Ishmael Reed at the meeting they addressed, even more harsh than may be gathered from the written statement Chin has subsequently prepared and the now decidedly softened version of the prepared text from which Reed delivered his bitterly ironic denunciation of Jewish critics. Chin upbraided his audience of bored MLA members for their presumed reluctance to read Asian-American literature while piously insisting that he had served his time with white writers like Shakespeare. Reed likened the pronouncements of Jewish critics upon Black literature to those of Professor Shockley upon Black intelligence, and he asserted that in their denial of Black culture Jewish critics were paradoxically resurrecting the very strategies that Hitler practiced upon the Jews. In a cruel caricature of militant Jewish response to the Holocaust, Reed's final injunction (discreetly omitted from his printed text) to these Jewish critics was Never again.
