This article explores the issue of sustainability management, focusing on the application of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) for evaluating company sustainability. The aim of the study is to reveal the development process of such a system in an agricultural production company by analyzing the key aspects of creating a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC). The relevance of the research stems from the growing need for companies in the agricultural sector to integrate sustainability principles into their performance assessment and to develop management systems that reflect not only economic but also social and environmental performance. The study is based on a descriptive case study strategy, drawing on the practical example of a single company and aiming to describe how the SBSC is implemented in practice. The findings indicate that the introduction of the SBSC enables better alignment of strategic goals with sustainability principles and fosters more socially responsible behavior. The results of the article may be useful for other companies in the agricultural production sector seeking to implement sustainability strategies and assess their effectiveness through an integrated and well-structured indicator system.

The sustainability balanced scorecard
  • Sep 3, 2018
  • Florian Lüdeke-Freund + 1 more

Kaplan and Norton’s Balanced Scorecard is a management tool that supports the successful implementation of corporate strategies. It has been discussed and considered widely both in practice and research. By linking operational and non-financial corporate activities with causal chains to the firm’s long-term strategy the Balanced Scorecard supports the alignment and management of all corporate activities according to their strategic relevance. The Balanced Scorecard makes it possible to take into account non-monetary strategic success factors which significantly impact the economic success of a business. It is thus a promising starting-point to also incorporate environmental and social aspects into the main management system of a firm. This paper proposes for value-oriented corporate sustainability management with the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard. This helps to overcome the shortcomings of conventional approaches to environmental and social management systems by integrating the three pillars of sustainability into a single and overarching management tool. A Sustainability Balanced Scorecard shows the causal relation between the economic, environmental, and social performance of firms. On the one side this paper discusses the different possible forms of a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard from a conceptual point of view. On the other side it shows the process and steps of formulating a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard for a fictitious company in practice based on the experience of a major joint research project in Germany and Switzerland. 1 Corresponding author: Marcus Wagner, e-mail: mwagner@uni-lueneburg.de. Sustainability balanced scorecard architecture and environmental performance outcomes: a systematic review
  • Feb 5, 2021
  • International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management
  • Suaad Jassem + 2 more

PurposeThis study aims to assess the current state of research on the use of sustainability balanced scorecards (SBSCs), as they relate to environmental performance-related outcomes. It also seeks to present a conceptual framework proposing relationships between SBSC and environmental performance.Design/methodology/approachThis paper conducts a systematic literature review of articles published in double-blind peer-reviewed journals that are listed on Scopus and/or Web of Science databases.FindingsThe first part of the paper reveals that two architectures of SBSC appear to be dominant in the literature (SBSC-4 where sustainability parameters are integrated with the four perspectives of the balanced scorecard and SBSC-5 where sustainability is shown as an additional standalone fifth perspective). The next part of the paper presents a conceptual model relating SBSC as decision-making tools to environmental performance outcomes. The paper also indicates that SBSC knowledge mediates the above relationships. Furthermore, based on the theory of expert competence, the presence of experts possibly moderates the relationship between SBSC architecture and environmental performance outcomes.Research limitations/implicationsThe literature indicates a lack of consensus on establishing a clear linkage on the relationship between SBSC architecture and environmental performance outcomes. As a result, a holistic conceptual framework where SBSC knowledge acts as a mediator and presence of experts as a moderator may be able to provide a more consistent relationship between SBSC architecture and environmental performance outcomes.Practical implicationsThe conceptual framework proposed provides factors to be considered by decision makers, for effective outcomes when aiming to achieve environmental stewardship objectives.Social implicationsEnvironmental performance by business organisations have come under close scrutiny of stakeholders. As a result, the holistic model proposed in the current study may pave the path for decision-makers to achieve superior environmental outcomes, leading to greater satisfaction of stakeholders such as the communities that are impacted by the business operations of an organisation.Originality/valueThis is the first paper to propose a model for future research regarding the link between SBSC and environmental performance outcomes – with expert managers acting as moderators and SBSC knowledge acting as a mediator.

How does environmental accounting information influence attention and investment?
  • Jun 16, 2009
  • International Journal of Accounting & Information Management
  • Hank C Alewine + 1 more

PurposeEnvironmental consequences increasingly influence management strategy and choice. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects on attention and investment of: incorporating environmental data into a balanced scorecard (BSC), called the sustainability balanced score card (SBSC) and the organization of environmental accounting information.Design/methodology/approachIn a between‐participant design, participants (n≈ 95) chose from among two investments using BSCs. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: no environmental data (control or BSC condition); environmental data embedded within the traditional BSC (four‐perspective SBSC); or environmental data added to a BSC as a standalone fifth perspective (five‐perspective SBSC).FindingsInvestment to achieve environmental stewardship objectives was greater with the four‐perspective SBSC than the traditional BSC. In addition, participants were most efficient, i.e. spent the least total time, and least time per data element examined, with the four‐perspective SBSC. Finally, the time spent examining, and decision weight given to, environmental data were unrelated.Research limitations/implicationsProfessional managers and accountants may have greater knowledge of environmental metrics than do students, who are the participants in this study; hence, the results may not generalize to higher knowledgeable professionals since their processing of environmental data may differ from the lower knowledge participants of this study.Practical implicationsThe form (i.e. organization) of environmental accounting data changed the allocation of participants' attention while the presence of environmental accounting data changed participants' investments; hence, both the presence and form of environmental accounting information influenced decision making.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to show differing influences from both the presence and organization of environmental accounting data on attention and investment.

Sustainable development using the sustainability balanced score card: the case of Tata Motors, India
  • Jan 1, 2010
  • International Journal of Sustainable Strategic Management
  • Barnali Chaklader + 1 more

There is growing interest within businesses to improve the sustainability of operations, which is, balancing short term goals of turnover and profit with long term goals in social and environmental performance. The 'balanced score card' (BSC) (Kaplan and Norton, 1996) is a strategy-centred performance-measurement tool that enables firms to align their operations to their business strategies. The conventional BSC includes four perspectives: financial, customer, internal process and learning and innovation but excludes two important long term perspectives: environmental and social. Dyllick and associates (1992) have shown that appropriate strategy for the management of environmental and social aspects is lacking. This lacuna can be addressed if the BSC also covers the environmental and social perspectives, enabling firms to evolve relevant strategy. Using the concepts of BSC and sustainability BSC (SBSC), this paper extends the conventional BSC of a firm to include social and environmental factors, invoking Tata Motors Ltd. as a case study.

Impact of Sustainability Balanced Scorecard Types on Environmental Investment Decision-Making
  • Feb 17, 2018
  • Sustainability
  • Suaad Jassem + 2 more

Investment decision-making based on aspects of sustainability is gaining importance among organizations around the globe. In this context, there is a need for quality investment decisions, which require sufficient knowledge among organizational managers about managing sustainability information to achieve environmental objectives that meet stakeholder expectations. This has led to the emergence of organizational performance measuring tools such as the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard, which integrates the environmental perspective into the traditional Balanced Scorecard. Using experimental research method, the objective of this study is to investigate the indirect effect of Eco-efficiency knowledge and Sustainability Balanced Scorecard knowledge as mediators influencing the relationship between Sustainability Balanced Scorecard types and their impact on environmental investment decision-making. Findings of the current research are based on 60 respondents who were randomly assigned to one of the following two types of Sustainability Balanced Scorecard architecture: (1) environmental data embedded within the traditional Balanced Scorecard perspectives; and (2) standalone environmental data as an additional fifth perspective along with the traditional Balanced Scorecard architecture. The traditional Balanced Scorecard without any information on environmental perspective is included in the experiment as the control condition. The findings indicate that the combined effect of eco-efficiency knowledge and Sustainability Balanced Scorecard knowledge has a significant positive influence on the relationship between the Balanced Scorecard type versus Sustainability Balanced Scorecard type and environmental investment decision-making.

Optimizing Environmental Performance Through Corporate Governance Mediated by The Sustainability Balanced Scorecard in Indonesia’s Energy Sector
  • Oct 8, 2025
  • Financial Engineering
  • Andi Irfan + 2 more

This study examines the relationship between good corporate governance, sustainability balanced scorecard, and environmental performance in Indonesian energy sector companies, investigating whether sustainability reporting mediates the governance-performance relationship. Methodology using panel data regression with random effects model. This study analyzes 35 energy companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during 2021-2023, yielding 105 firm-year observations. Good corporate governance is measured by independent commissioner proportions, sustainability balanced scorecard using RDAP model criteria, and environmental performance through PROPER certification rankings. The analysis employs systematic model selection procedures and comprehensive diagnostic testing. Findings, only one of four hypotheses is supported. Good corporate governance significantly influences sustainability balanced scorecard implementation (β = 0.006, p = 0.018), supporting agency theory predictions. However, good corporate governance does not directly affect environmental performance (p = 0.748), sustainability balanced scorecard fails to enhance environmental performance (p = 0.692), and no mediation effect exists (p = 0.347). The results reveal a decoupling between sustainability reporting practices and actual environmental outcomes.

Developing a business intelligence tool for sustainability management
  • Oct 13, 2023
  • Business Process Management Journal
  • Ricardo Chalmeta + 1 more

PurposeBusiness intelligence (BI) is a combination of computer systems and managerial processes to support decision-making. The balanced scorecard is a kind of business intelligence tool for performance measurement and management control aimed at balancing financial and non-financial as well as short- and long-term measures. The sustainable balanced scorecard is a modification of the original balanced scorecard developed to expressly consider governance, social, environmental and ethical issues, and therefore to allow sustainability concepts to be included within the strategy and the management of the organization. However, although the sustainable balanced scorecard is one of the most suitable tools for integrating sustainability within management, there are few examples of how to develop and implement it which can be used as reference models. To help solve this problem, this paper proposes a methodology for the development of a sustainable balanced scorecard, considering different phases such as planification, analysis, design or computer tool implementation, and describes the findings of three case studies.Design/methodology/approachThe research was conducted using the qualitative multiple-case study method. This made it possible to establish the methodological issues regarding the performance and reporting of this study. Therefore, the research method for the conceptualization and execution of the case studies was divided into seven phases: definition of research goals and questions; proposed theoretical model; identification of units of analysis; case selection; definition of research methods and resources; fieldwork; data collection, classification of information and triangulation; formulation of the enhanced theory, model or methodology; and verification of the rigour and quality of the study.FindingsPaper shows a methodology organized in phases, activities and tasks that allow a sustainable balanced scorecard to be planned, designed, built, computerized and controlled in order to integrate sustainability within the management systems of organizations.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the currently emerging sustainable balanced scorecard literature and practice and, more generally, to research on sustainability measurement and management. The methodology for sustainable balanced scorecard development and implementation showed in this paper contributes to the management and information systems theory because it makes it possible to overcome the shortcomings identified to date: it considers all the sustainability dimensions; it describes all the project life-cycle activities; it encourages stakeholders' participation; and it has been proved to work in real situations.

Towards a Sustainable Governance of Information Systems: Devising a Maturity Assessment Tool of Eco-Responsibility Inspired by the Balanced Scorecard
  • Jan 1, 2012
  • Amélie Bohas + 1 more

The assessment of the maturity of Information System (IS) regarding its contribution to corporate social responsibility policy is considered as a stake for organizations. However, few research efforts have been dedicated to this evaluation and even less to the elaboration of a management tool. This paper adopts an engineering perspective to develop a performance assessment approach in this field. Theoretically, this communication (1) mobilizes the methodology of engineering research to build a measurement system of the IS maturity in relation to the economic, social and environmental performance, (2) extends the researches about the sustainable balanced scorecard (SBSC) to the field of IS governance. Practically, this study provides organizations with a global approach to this complex phenomenon as well as a guide to assess it. The originality of this research lies in the application of the conceptual framework of the SBSC to a new research domain.

  • Lindiana Araújo + 2 more

The agricultural sector in Brazil has a noticeable impact on its wealth and a significant effect on sustainability. This study presents the corporate sustainability management through the integration of social and environmental issues in the traditional Balanced Scorecard, that is, through a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC). It establishes causal relationships between economic, social and environmental perspectives, and highlights its potential impacts. This study relays on the Brazilian company with the largest amount of agricultural land. This company acquires, develop, exploit and commercialize rural properties that are suitable for agriculture. The main purpose of this paper is to study the company and to propose an SBSC. We present a qualitative case study based on interviews and on documental analysis. We conclude that, through this framework, sustainability can be aligned with the strategic management of the company. The implementation of an SBSC provides organizational benefits and must take into consideration the peculiarities of each organization.

Enhancing the Formation and Implementation of Sustainability Strategies Using the Balanced Scorecard
  • Apr 30, 2015
  • Gyula Fülöp + 4 more

Given the strategic challenges of the 21st century, it becomes fundamental to determine strategic alternatives for sustainability. This chapter aims to contribute to the successful formation and implementation of corporate strategies for sustainability and business excellence, through the development and application of an extended Balanced Scorecard (BSC), which includes the social and environmental perspectives. We outline the structure for a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC) as well as the steps required for its development. Elements for each of the different sustainability strategies of the SBSC are proposed and, finally, a case study of the formation and introduction of a “credible” sustainability strategy in the chemical industry is presented. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the SBSC in pursuing sustainability strategies, and provide evidence that the introduction of such a system is likely to lead to fundamental changes in the way a company is managed. Practical implications and managerial guidelines are also presented.

  • Eirini Stavropoulou + 4 more

A green balanced scorecard allows businesses to monitor their environmental progress and energy use, as well as quantify their achievements toward decreasing their ecological footprint. The scope of the current research is twofold: (i) to highlight the new sustainable profile of the Balanced Scorecard; and (ii) to investigate the contribution of the Sustainable Balanced Scorecard to the achievement of the energy efficiency and environmental goals of businesses. The present research study applies the rigorous bibliometric analysis technique and the PRISMA method for the years 2011–2023 to investigate the most popular research sources and documents, where the most frequently used keywords and research trends are utilized to answer the research question. In addition, findings from the network, content, and cluster analyses were visualized with the use of the bibliometric tools of Biblioshiny and VOSviewer. The results of the study indicate that businesses have made it a priority to build an energy-efficient management system based on the Sustainable Balanced Scorecard, which will help them achieve their organization’s environmental strategic goals. Moreover, a new era in the Sustainable Balanced Scorecard, that of the Contact Balanced Scorecard, has started emerging in the field. This article explains how the Sustainable Balanced Scorecard benefits organizations by enabling them to enhance their performance on both the economic and social fronts as well as the environmental front. Finally, by employing strategic evaluation methods like the Sustainable Balanced Scorecard to analyze organizations’ sustainability performance, the present study effort supports the sustainable growth of enterprises.
