Abstract

Heat transfer experiments were performed to study the effect of flow separation on the heat transfer characteristics of external axisymmetric two-dimensional turbulent, separated flow. The flow separation was induced by a sharp-edged disc, facing the flow direction. Reattachment and redevelopment of the fluid occurred behind the point of separation. Air was the working fluid and the Reynolds numbers varied from 5000 to 20000. It was found that the heat transfer coefficients in the separated and reattached regions were significantly larger than those obtained for fully developed flow with a maximum occurring at the point of flow reattachment. Empirical equations were given for the Nusselt number at the reattachment point correlated as functions of Reynolds number.
