Abstract

What constitutes truth, virtue and beauty are the three fundamental questions of the ancient discipline of philosophy. A wonderful article by Parker and Gibb (1998) discuss their relevance to midwifery, reminding us that the mother of Socrates, the great Greek philosopher, was a midwife. Socrates drew parallels between what he did as a philosopher, nurturing the getting of wisdom in others with his mother's ‘midwifing’ of the new mother and new baby. I want to share some reflections on these three great questions about truth, virtue and beauty in relation to childbirth today.
