Abstract

Abstract Triads are the smallest unit where we can begin to observe network dynamics. We see how a link affects another link or a node affects a link once removed. We apply the balance theory that addresses balanced states and unbalanced states in a triad. We also study, in a triad, how power can come from the structural position. One such position is the structural hole—a bridge that sits on the structural hole can be a tertius gaudens (the third that profits) or a tertius iungens (the third that channels). A new type of tertius is proposed, tertius adiuvans, the third that helps another node in the triad, albeit reluctantly. Triads can help explain supply chain disintermediation, embedded supplier performance, and services outsourcing.
