Abstract

Three decades of regional planning in São Francisco valley. — The Sâo Francisco valley is among the first regions to have been developed in Brazil. The author examines the reasons for this (some of which are to be ascribed to a certain vision of space in Brazil), as well as the issues debated at the time and the modes of development chosen. Under the pressure of diverging geographic and economic trends, an important shift has taken place during the last three decades, and problems have cropped up as regards the dealing out of resources (water and capital) and selection of their beneficiaries (whether local populations or Brazil's more developed regions) .
