Trends and Research Hotspots in Biomarkers of Sjögren's Syndrome Over the Past Two Decades: A Data-Driven Atlas Analysis.
Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder primarily characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth, often involving multiple organ systems. The disease's heterogeneous clinical presentation and the absence of non-invasive, specific biomarkers complicate its diagnosis and prognostic assessment. Literature was sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection, and a bibliometric network was constructed using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Bibliometrix. This analysis covered countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, citations, and keywords, offering an overview of SS biomarker research and identifying future directions. A total of 1118 articles on SS biomarkers were analyzed. Publication trends fluctuated over the years, with China and the United States leading in volume and citation frequency. The Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris was the most prolific institution. Among researchers, Xavier Mariette dominated the field, with leading positions in volume of publications, h-index, and total citations. Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases emerged as the most influential journal. Over the past two decades, research has expanded significantly, with emerging themes including "DNA methylation," "genes," "interstitial lung disease," and "data-driven," indicating future focus areas such as epigenetics, severe complication biomarkers, and multi-omics studies. This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive view of SS biomarker research, highlighting recent trends and future research directions, offering valuable insights for ongoing studies.

The rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has attracted worldwide attention. There were also reported gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with COVID-19. This work aims to analyze the global research trends in COVID-19 and digestive disease. The related papers on COVID-19 and digestive disease were identified with Pubmed and web of science core collection on September 3, 2021. Bibliometric visualization was conducted through VOSviewer and CiteSpace. The analytic research was based on original articles and reviews. There were 997 articles found, with citations ranging from 0 to 878. These articles were distributed among 86 countries and 355 journals. The USA mainly contributed (288 articles), where 3 of the top 10 institutions were located. Followed by China (215 articles) and Italy (160 articles). The highest level of scientific collaboration has been formed between the USA to China. The World Journal of Gastroenterology (39 papers) published the most significant number of articles. Concerning the research topic, the colon/small bowel had the largest number of articles, followed by the liver and pancreaticobiliary. "Liver injury," "inflammatory bowel disease," "management," and "endoscopy" were the hotspot keywords. The largest cluster of liver transplantation had offered hints regarding research frontiers. The analytic results showed that the liver, especially liver transplantation, and inflammatory bowel disease were the 2 most influential research topics in COVID-19 and digestive disease.

BackgroundAsthma is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease, and recent research highlights the role of epigenetic modifications, such as DNA and RNA methylation, in its pathogenesis. This study aims to provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to evaluate research trends and hotspots in DNA and RNA methylation within asthma-related research.ResultsData were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection, focusing on English-language publications. Bibliometric tools, including VOSviewer and CiteSpace, were used to analyze publication metrics, author contributions, and keyword trends. The analysis revealed that DNA methylation research in asthma began in 1994 and has shown significant annual growth, while RNA methylation research started a year earlier but with a slightly slower growth trajectory. The United States, China, and the United Kingdom are the leading contributors, with Harvard University being notably influential. Research on DNA methylation has shown higher rates of international collaboration. Despite substantial growth in both areas, recent years have seen a decline in annual publications and citations. The "Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology" was identified as the most influential journal in this field. While DNA methylation research is more mature, RNA methylation is gaining prominence, particularly in understanding asthma pathogenesis. Future research should focus on underdeveloped areas, such as "sublingual immunotherapy" and "occupational asthma" for DNA methylation, and "obesity", "lncRNA", "miRNA", "vitamin D", and methylation markers such as "m6A", "m5C", and "m7G" for RNA methylation.ConclusionsThis bibliometric analysis provides a detailed overview of the research landscape in DNA and RNA methylation in asthma. The findings highlight significant growth and collaboration in this field, with specific areas identified for future research. Understanding these trends can help guide future studies and potentially lead to new therapeutic approaches for asthma.

BackgroundTrimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite dependent on intestinal microbiota, is closely related to the emergence, progression, and prognosis of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and has received increasing attention in recent years.ObjectiveThe current research hotspots and future development trends in TMAO and CVD field are found through bibliometrics analysis, which provides reference for further study.MethodsThe bibliometrics tools VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to analyze the publications from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. The articles published from 2004 to 2024 about the relationship between TMAO and CVD were retrieved. Bibliometric analysis includes annual publications, countries/regions, institutions, authors and co-cited authors, journals and cited-journals, references and keywords.ResultsAfter searching and screening, 1,466 publications were included for subsequent bibliometric analysis. Since 2014, the number of publications exposing the relationship between TMAO and CVD has increased rapidly, as has the frequency of citations. China, USA and Italy are the countries that publish the most relevant research. Cleveland Clinic is the leading institution in this field. Stanley L Hazen, Zeneng Wang and W H Wilson Tang are the most prolific authors in this field, and the latter two have the closest academic cooperation. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Journal of the American Heart Association are influential journals that publish research in this field. “Gut Microbial Metabolite TMAO Enhances Platelet Hyperreactivity and Thrombosis Risk” is the most frequently cited article. Keyword analysis shows that gut microbiota, metabolism, phosphatidylcholine and atherosclerosis (AS) are the hotspots in this field.ConclusionThis study summarizes the research situation of TMAO and CVD in the past 20 years, focusing on the effect of TMAO on pathogenesis of AS, predictive value of TMAO on CVD risk, and dietary and drug intervention for TMAO. Probiotics and natural products may be the research focus of preventing and treating CVD by intervening TMAO in the future.

This study aims to visualize the trends and hotspots in the research of "ferroptosis in PD" and "pyroptosis in PD" through bibliometric analysis from the past to 2024. Literature was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) from the past to February 16, 2024, and bibliometric analysis was conducted using Vosviewer and Citespace. 283 and 542 papers were collected in the field of "ferroptosis in PD" and "pyroptosis in PD." The number of publications in both fields has increased yearly, especially in "ferroptosis in PD," which will become the focus of PD research. China, the United States and England had extensive exchanges and collaborations in both fields, and more than 60% of the top 10 institutions were from China. In the fields of "ferroptosis in PD" and "pyroptosis in PD," the University of Melbourne and Nanjing Medical University stood out in terms of publication numbers, citation frequency, and centrality, and the most influential journals were Cell and Nature, respectively. The keyword time zone map showed that molecular mechanisms and neurons were the research hotspots of "ferroptosis in PD" in 2023, while memory and receptor 2 were the research hotspots of "pyroptosis in PD" in 2023, which may predict the future research direction. This study provides insights into the development, collaborations, research themes, hotspots, and tendencies of "ferroptosis in PD" and "pyroptosis in PD." Overall situation of these fields is available for researchers to further explore the underlying mechanisms and potential treatments.

Purpose To assess the quantity and quality of global research on uveitis, visualize the research hotspots, and reveal the study trends in uveitis. Methods This bibliometric analysis was performed with the data obtained from the Web of Science core collection (WoSCC) database and Scopus. Bibliometrix and VOSviewer were used to analyze and visualize study trends and hotspots. Citespace was used to conduct the cooperation and co-citation network analysis. Results A total of 5837 and 7195 documents were exported for further analysis in WoSCC and Scopus, respectively. The USA has published the most articles related to uveitis (1627, 27.87%, WoS; 1979, 27.51%, Scopus) and accounted for the most frequency of total citations (42345 times total citations 35 900 times without self-citations in WoSCC database). Most of the papers focusing on uveitis were published in Ocular Immunology and Inflammation (761, 13.04% within WoS; 793, 11.02% within Scopus). Additionally, novel biotherapy is the hotspot of uveitis research which also may be a sustained research interest in the future. Conclusions An increasing trend of publications was found in uveitis research. The USA was the leading contributor in this field, and it was the center of cooperation network. Our study provided an overview of uveitis research, which may serve as a valuable reference and guide for stakeholders interested in uveitis.

BackgroundTumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) plays a dual role in pulmonary tuberculosis, mediating protective immune responses while also contributing to pathological tissue damage. This dichotomy has attracted considerable research interest in recent years. Nevertheless, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis in this specific field remains lacking. The present study aims to fill this gap by examining global research trends and identifying emerging hotspots related to TNF-α in pulmonary tuberculosis through bibliometric methods.MethodsRelevant literature published between 1990 and 2024 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R 4.3.3 were utilized for the analysis.ResultsA total of 1,200 articles were included in this study. The annual number of publications has consistently increased since 1990, with an average annual growth rate of 10.73%. These articles were authored by 6,129 researchers affiliated with 1,581 institutions across 83 countries/regions. The United States emerged as the leading contributor, ranking first in both total publications (TP =277) and citations [14,911]. The Indian Council of Medical Research was the most productive institution, with 83 articles. Kaplan G. was identified as the most influential author, ranking first in total citations (TC =2,348) and achieving an H-index of 17. The Journal of Immunology led the journals in both citations [4,332] and H-index [46]. The most frequently occurring keyword included “mycobacterium-tuberculosis”, “infection”, and “interferon-gamma”. Recent keyword bursts featured “biomarkers” [2019–2024] and “inflammation” [2022–2024].ConclusionsThis bibliometric analysis underscores the evolving focus of TNF-α research in pulmonary tuberculosis, transitioning from foundational studies on immune mechanisms to applied research aimed at diagnostics and biomarkers. Future research should aim to validate the effectiveness of TNF-α gene markers across different populations and disease stages, investigate their molecular mechanisms and interactions with other cytokines, and work towards optimizing personalized treatments and improving clinical management outcomes.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the presence of gray matter lesions and alterations in white matter. This study aims to investigate the research related to white matter in the context of AD from a Bibliometric standpoint. Regular and review articles focusing on the research pertaining to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and white matter were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database, covering the period from its inception to 10th July 2023. The "Bibliometrix" R package was employed to summarize key findings, to quantify the occurrence of top keywords, and to visualize the collaborative network among countries. Furthermore, VOSviewer software was utilized to conduct co-authorship and co-occurrence analyses. CiteSpace was employed to identify the most influential references and keywords based on their citation bursts. The retrieval of AD- and white matter-related publications was conducted by the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis and visualization, including the examination of annual publication distribution, prominent countries, active institutions and authors, core journals, co-cited references, and keywords, were carried out by using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, the Bibliometrix Package, and the ggplot2 Package. The quality and impact of publications were assessed using the total global citation score and total local citation score. A total of 5,714 publications addressing the intersection of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and white matter were included in the analysis. The majority of publications originated from the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. Prominent journals were heavily featured in the publication output. In addition to "Alzheimer's disease" and "white matter," "mild cognitive impairment," "MRI" and "atrophy" had been frequently utilized as "keywords." This Bibliometric investigation delineated a foundational knowledge framework that encompasses countries, institutions, authors, journals, and articles within the AD and white matter research domain spanning from 1981 to 2023. The outcomes provide a comprehensive perspective on the broader landscape of this research field.

Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a transformative approach for developing high-performance clinical prediction models (CPMs). By leveraging multidimensional patient data, ML enables more accurate disease risk stratification, prognostic assessment, and clinical decision-making. In recent years, research on CPMs has expanded rapidly, with nearly 250,000 publications indexed as of 2024. Despite this remarkable growth, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the field is currently lacking. This study aimed to analyze the global research status, evolutionary trends, and thematic hotspots of machine learning-based clinical prediction models (ML-CPMs) through bibliometric and visualization techniques. Publications related to ML-CPMs were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and the Scopus database (up to May 9, 2025). Bibliometric analyses were performed using various tools, including R, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace, to generate annual publication trends, collaboration networks, and journal distributions, as well as co-citation, clustering, and keyword analyses. A total of 8,619 publications (8,000 original articles and 619 reviews) from 118 countries were identified. Since 2015, annual publications have grown exponentially (R²=0.9919). While China led in total publication volume, the United States maintained the highest academic influence (H-index = 105; Total Citations = 66,788). Harvard University and BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making emerged as the most productive institution and journal, respectively. Tian J from the Chinese Academy of Sciences led in publication count, while Wynants L from KU Leuven in Belgium recorded the highest citation frequency. Key research hotspots include algorithm optimization, multimodal data integration, and model interpretability, with clinical applications primarily focused on oncology, cardiovascular diseases, and critical care medicine. Research on ML-CPMs has experienced rapid global growth over the past decade, forming extensive international collaboration networks. However, challenges such as limited interpretability, data heterogeneity, and privacy concerns persist. Future studies should prioritize external validation, clinical applicability, and the integration of human-AI collaborative decision-making to ensure robust implementation in real-world clinical settings.

Background:Autophagy is intimately associated with the development of cardiomyopathy and has received widespread attention in recent years. However, no relevant bibliometric analysis is reported at present. In order to summarize the research status of autophagy in cardiomyopathy and provide direction for future research, we conducted a comprehensive, detailed, and multidimensional bibliometric analysis of the literature published in this field from 2004 to 2023.Methods:All literatures related to autophagy in cardiomyopathy from 2004 to 2023 was collected from the Web of Science Core Collection, and annual papers, global publication trends, and proportion charts were analyzed and plotted using GraphPad price v8.0.2. In addition, CtieSpace [6.2.4R (64-bit) Advanced Edition] and VOSviewer (1.6.18 Edition) were used to analyze and visualize these data.Results:Two thousand two hundred seventy-nine papers about autophagy in cardiomyopathy were accessed in the Web of Science Core Collection over the last 20 years, comprising literatures from 70 countries and regions, 2208 institutions, and 10 810 authors. China contributes 56.32% of the total publications, substantially surpassing other countries, while the United States is ranked first in frequency of citations. Among the top 10 authors, six are from China, and four are from the United States. Air Force Military Medical University was the institution with the highest number of publications, while the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology (62 articles, 2.71% of the total) was the journal with the highest number of papers published in the field. Clustering of co-cited references and temporal clustering analysis showed that ferroptosis, hydrogen sulfide mitophagy, lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress, and SIRT1 are hot topics and trends in the field. The principal keywords are oxidative stress, heart, and heart failure.Conclusion:The research on autophagy in cardiomyopathy is in the developmental stage. This represents the first bibliometric analysis of autophagy in cardiomyopathy, revealing the current research hotspots and future research directions in this field.

Sicca syndrome (dry mouth and dry eyes) occurs predominantly due to the side effects of medication, systemic diseases (Sjögren’s disease), and radiotherapy of the head and neck region. Sicca complaints decrease the quality of life, cause sleep disturbances, and affect overall health. This systematic literature review investigates the correlation and/or association between dry mouth and dry eyes. A comprehensive search was conducted through PubMed and Web of Science databases up to November 2024. English-language research studies investigating the association and/or correlation between dry mouth and dry eyes were included. Study quality was assessed using NIH quality assessment tools. Data on publication details, participant characteristics, assessment methods, and outcomes was extracted and synthesised based on the type of outcome (objective and/or subjective assessments) and cohort type. Out of 863 records, 27 studies met the eligibility criteria (published 1989–2024), including three observational cohort (n = 942), 15 cross-sectional (n = 6165), and nine case-control (n = 1326 patients, n = 841 controls). 13 studies focused on symptoms in Sjögren’s disease, seven in other patient groups, and eight in the general population. Significant correlation and/or association between oral and ocular objective assessments was found in 10 out of 27 studies, and between subjective assessments in 18 out of 19. Within that, 10 out 10 studies assessing self-reported subjective dry mouth and eyes found significant associations. This systematic review provides a general overview of the relationship between dry mouth and dry eyes. It also highlights the need for standardised diagnostic guidelines for dry mouth and dry eyes. Due to its high morbidity and mortality, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become a major global healthcare issue. Although there is abundant research regarding COPD, a bibliometric analysis of the literature related to mitochondria and COPD is lacking. Thus this study aimed to summarize the research status, research direction, and research hotspots of the published articles concerning COPD and mitochondria. A literature search for included publications related to COPD and mitochondria was carried out on the Web of Science Core Collection from the date of database establishment to December 15, 2022. A subsequent bibliometric and visual analysis of the included publications was conducted via Microsoft Excel, R software, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer. A total of 227 published articles on COPD and mitochondria from 139 journals were included. Over the study period, the annual publication number and citation frequency in this field both showed a trend of continuous growth. The United States had the highest centrality and was the most productive country. The frequently occurring keywords were "oxidative stress", "obstructive pulmonary disease", "dysfunction", "mitochondria", "inflammation", and "cigarette smoke", among others. Recent research hotspots included autophagy, model, mitochondria, health, and extracellular vesicles (EVs). Despite an abundance and variety of research, there is still relatively little academic communications between scholars and institutions. This bibliometric study can help researchers gain a quick overview of the research into mitochondria and COPD and thus inform novel ideas and directions for future research in this field.

Spinal pain is a pervasive global health issue that poses significant challenges because of the disability and economic burden it causes. Despite the availability of various treatments for the condition, a definitive cure for spinal pain remains elusive, underscoring the need for innovative approaches. Artificial intelligence (AI) is considered a potential method for facilitating relief for patients suffering from spinal pain. This study utilized a bibliometric analysis to explore the impact of AI on spinal pain research, examining publication trends, collaboration patterns, author contributions, and keyword clusters, to analyze research focus and trends in this field. Bibliometric analysis. Data were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The literature related to AI-assisted techniques in spinal pain treatment was collected from the WoSCC. The CiteSpace and R Bibliometrix software packages were used in the analysis. In total, 310 articles were included, with the number of publications and citations increasing progressively. The greatest number of publications and total citations came from the United States. The University of Washington was the institution associated with the most publications. Mork PJ was the byline that appeared most often in association with both publications and total citations. The European Spine Journal was the journal in which the most publications appeared, while Spine had the greatest number of citations. The literature with the most global citations was published by Jamalusin A in the European Spine Journal, while the literature with the most local citations was by Sandal LF on JMIR Research Protocols. The most frequent key words were "machine learning," "low back pain," "magnetic resonance imaging, etc. LIMITATIONS: Only the English-language articles in the WoSCC database were included, and proceeding papers, meeting abstracts, and book chapters were excluded. Furthermore, we included no research about wearable sensors, virtual reality, and so on. Additionally, the articles from the other databases were not included. The research of applying AI as a treatment for spinal injury has appealed to interdisciplinary efforts, reflecting the potential for self-management, imaging processing, and clinical decision-making. An overall perspective is shown in our study, which facilitates understanding and provides research focuses and trends in this field.

BackgroundChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major global health burden. Mobile health (mHealth) has created new possibilities for the monitoring, rehabilitation, and management of COPD, yet a dedicated bibliometric analysis of this field is still lacking. This study aimed to characterize the research landscape, assess the current status, and explore future developmental trends.PurposeTo map the research status and developmental trends of mHealth for COPD through bibliometric analysis and provide evidence-based guidance for future research.MethodsPublications indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection and clinical trials indexed in PubMed were retrieved and screened for the period 2000–2025. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to analyze publication trends, leading journals, countries, institutions, authors, keywords, and cited references. The screening and reporting process followed the BIBLIO checklist.ResultsAfter screening, 1,177 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection and 119 clinical trials from PubMed were included. Research output and annual total citations showed sustained growth over time. The Journal of Medical Internet Research ranked first in publication volume, whereas the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare had the highest total citations. The United States was the most productive country, England ranked first in total citations, and Canada had the highest average citations per publication. The University of Toronto was the most productive institution, and Anne E. Holland and Michele Vitacca were the most prolific authors. Research hotspots mainly centered on COPD, telehealth, self-management, pulmonary rehabilitation, and quality of life. Remote monitoring and early warning, tele- and home-based rehabilitation, mHealth self-management support, and smart medication adherence management were identified as major functional components of mHealth. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies represented major emerging frontiers. For clinical research, future priorities included multicenter large-scale randomized controlled trials, integrated digital interventions for multimorbidity management, optimized remote strategies for exacerbation prevention and pulmonary rehabilitation, and further development of AI- and IoT-enabled personalized care.ConclusionThis study provides a comprehensive bibliometric overview of mHealth research in COPD. The findings highlight sustained growth, evolving research priorities, and rising academic impact in this field, while also revealing marked geographical disparities in research output. More robust, evidence-based, and context-adapted digital health strategies are needed to support the broader and more equitable development of this field.

Background: Since Lambotte and Payr first studied Mg-based alloys for orthopedics in 1900, the research of this field has finally ushered in vigorous development in the 21st century. From the perspective of quantitative analysis, this paper clearly demonstrated the global research trend from 2005 to 2021 by using bibliometrics and scientometric analysis.Methods: We obtained the publications from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. The bibliometric and scientometric analysis was conducted by using R software, CiteSpace software, VOSviewer software, Pajek software and Microsoft Excel program.Results: In total, 1921 publications were retrieved. It can be found that the number of publications is gradually increasing year by year. We can find that the most prolific countrie, institution and researcher are China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zheng Yufeng, respectively. The most influential journals in this field are Acta Biomaterialia and Biomaterials, with 16,511 and 12,314 total citations, respectively. By conducting the co-cited documents-based clustering analysis, 16 research hotspots and their representative studies have been identified.
