Abstract

Ground maize stalks (60% moisture) were treated with different chemical reagents to study their effects on in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD). Urea (6.6%), urea (6.6%) + Ca(OH) 2 (5.0%), Ca(OH) 2 (5.0%), NaOH (1%) + Ca(OH) 2 (5.0%), SO 2 (5.0%) and urea (6.6%) followed by SO 2 (5.0%) were the chemicals used. The treated maize stalks were incubated at 45 °C for 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10 and 14 days. In addition to these, hydrogen peroxide (H 2O 2) was used in different H 2O 2: substrate ratios (0:1, 1:20, 1:15, 1:10, 1:8, 1:6, 1:5 and 1:4) to react with alkaline maize stalks. Ca(OH) 2 was used as an alkaline reagent. The IVOMD of treated maize stalks was improved by 21.97%, 19.21% and 46.81% when treated with urea, SO 2 and urea + SO 2 respectively. Using H 2O 2 to react with alkaline maize stalks in a ratio of 1:5 (H 2O 2: substrate) improved the IVOMD by 29.01%.
