Abstract
A retrospective hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted at Shashemene Referral Hospital (SRH) to assess treatment outcome among multi-drug resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients. A total of 38 MDR-TB patients, completed their treatment during 2013 to 2017, were included in the study, of which half of them were males. Significant proportion (76.3%) of the study participants had successful treatment outcome. Nonetheless, 15.8% died and 7.9% experienced treatment failure. 97.4% of the study participants did not use previous second line anti-tuberculosis medications. Greater than half of them experienced adverse drug events. In conclusion, though more than half of MDR-TB patients had a good treatment outcome, more efforts should be added to increase favourable treatment outcome and reducing adverse effects.
