Abstract

A general formula for the nonlocal absorption power of trapped ions averaged over a magnetic surface in ion cyclotron radio-frequency (ICRF) heating is derived. The gyrokinetic equation is adopted and a full particle orbit and wave coupling are kept. The resulting expression for a Maxwellian plasma in tokamaks is compared with Stix’s theory [Nucl. Fusion 15, 737(1975)], which shows that Stix’s theory is rather good for the fundamental cyclotron frequency heating and the nonlocal effect is not negligible for the second-harmonic cyclotron frequency heating.
