Abstract

Abstract
During the past two decades 74 patients have undergone transureteroureterostomy without cutaneous ureterostomy. The results have been especially encouraging in the 20 pediatric patients who have undergone the procedure. Indications were numerous but most were for failure of ureteroneocystostomy. All patients are currently alive and healthy with a mean follow-up period of more than five years. Only one postoperative complication was encountered, namely, prolonged urine leakage. Renal function and structure improved or stabilized in every patient, and in no instance has there been stricture of the "recipient" ureter. Results indicate that transureteroureterostomy is especially applicable to the pediatric patient with distal ureteral disease.
