Versions of Faust quoted are those by: Abraham Hayward, 3rd edition, London 1838; Bayard Taylor, Chicago 1871, often reprinted; J. S. Blackie. 2nd edition revised, London 1880; Thomas E. Webb, LL.D., Dublin/London 1880; C. F. MacIntyre, Norfolk, Conn. 1941; Philip Wayne, Penguin Books, Harmondsworth 1949; Louis MacNeice, London 1952. All these except Wayne and MacNeice are treated by Adolf Ingram Frantz, Half a Hundred Thralls to Faust: A Study Based on the British and American Translators of Goethe's Faust 1823–1949, with a foreword by Carl F. Schreiber, Chapel Hill 1949, which also has a full bibliography to date of English translations of Faust. Most of the works listed by Frantz can be conveniently consulted together in the collection of English versions of Faust made by H. G. Fiedler, now in the library of the Taylorian Institution, Oxford. I am grateful for the opportunity of using them there. That collection naturally does not contain the two recent versions with which this paper is primarily concerned, viz.
