Abstract

Solanum brevidens Phil. is a wild species of potato that does not bear tubers but has resistance to potato leaf roll virus (PLRV), potato virus X, and potato virus Y (Jones et al. 1990). It is, however, sexually incompatible with the domestic potato, S. tuberosum. Somatic hybrids of S. brevidens + S. tuberosum are resistant to PLRV and late blight (Helgeson et al. 1986) and have shown a novel resistance to Erwinia tuber soft rot (Austin et al. 1988). Because these interspecific somatic hybrids are fertile, they have great potential for use in potato breeding programs (Helgeson et al. 1993). One method that has facilitated the selection of S. tuberosum + S. brevidens somatic hybrids is transformation of S. brevidens with the nptll selectable marker before protoplast fusion (Puite and Schaart 1993). Another potentially important use for trans-genic S. brevidens is the preferential inclusion of chromosomes in asymmetric fusion products between irradiated transgenic S. brevidens and S. tuberosum (Puite and Schaart 1993).
