Abstract
According to this study: * Compared with standard-issue red blood cells, fresh red blood cells do not improve mortality rates among critically ill adults. * Using standard-issue red cells (which may be stored for as long as 42 days) would eliminate the costs associated with the storage and handling of fresh cells.
