Abstract
My excuse for appearing to-night before you is my enthusiasm for the practical and technical part of my own profession, an enthusiasm which was aroused during the War when, one day, I received a chit to the effect that forthwith (and in those days everything was “forthwith” !) I should assume charge of the X-ray department of the Hospital to which I was attached. My qualifications for such a post were immense for, being completely ignorant of all the principles and practices of Radiology, I was able to commence my new duties with no pre-conceived ideas! The result was that I had to learn from the experience of many failures. Since that time the utilisation of X rays for diagnosis and treatment has been an all-absorbing study. This, however, is hardly sufficient to warrant my addressing you.
