Abstract

Toxoplasmosis has become of particular interest lately because of its occurrence in man. We became interested in this infection about three years ago when it was occasionally found in our inoculated guinea pigs. More recently, during the course of an experimental typhus study, complicating infections which were believed to be toxoplasmosis began to occur with annoying frequency in guinea pigs inoculated with saline suspensions of wild rat brains. During the period of March through November, 1941, we inoculated the brains of 1943 wild rats* into guinea pigs in pools of 2 to 8 brains (usually 5 to 6). A total of 351 such pools were inoculated and 2 guinea pigs were used for each pool. Toxoplasmosis was encountered 94 times, 63 times in both inoculated guinea pigs and 31 times in one of the pair. In this same period the brains of 39 wild rats were inoculated singly into pairs of guinea pigs. Seven toxoplasma infections occurred; 5 in both guinea pigs and 2 in one.
