Abstract

Realizing sustainable development and meeting the related requirements cause gigantic challenges to the manufacturing industry. This study was motivated by the assumption that better understanding of the aspects of sustainable development, the current situation of companies and their future expectations can help move closer towards sustainability. The paper presents a literature review on sustainable development, sustainable production and related practices and then summarizes a study conducted within the Finnish manufacturing industry. The study showed that, currently, sustainable development does not have a very important role in operations and decisions of Finnish manufacturing companies but its importance is expected to increase in the future. To realize sustainable development and manufacturing, top management initiatives as well as practices and measures for improving and evaluating manufacturing sustainability are needed.
