Amid growing global environmental concerns, education plays a critical role in shaping students' understanding and attitudes toward sustainability. Science education, in particular, is uniquely positioned to foster environmental awareness and encourage responsible behaviors. This research was conducted to identify science teachers' perspectives regarding their role in instilling environmental sustainability values and reinforcing responsible behaviors among their students. A qualitative approach was employed through conducting interviews with a purposive convenience sample of 51 primary-stage science teachers in Saudi Arabia. Collected data was analyzed based on the grounded theory approach to facilitate the extraction of core ideas and themes. The findings demonstrated that teachers are deeply aware of their role in the reciprocal relation between human and the environment, which extends beyond knowledge transmission to shaping students' environmental behaviors, and that their environmental practices function as a model that strongly influences students' practices. Teachers' awareness of modeling, intellectual empowerment, and capability to link learning to real life situations demonstrated their deep understanding of how environmental education shapes long-term environmental attitudes. They highlighted empowering students to expect environmental challenges through integrating science curricula into real-life concerns. The findings strongly support integrating sustainability across disciplines to provide a comprehensive understanding of the concept and demonstrate science teachers' advanced educational vision to facilitate values and critical thinking rather than knowledge transmission. Keywords: primary science education, environmental sustainability, teachers' beliefs, contextualized teaching

The increasing emphasis on environmental sustainability in Malaysia highlights the need to assess green behaviour, green knowledge, self-esteem and well-being among school teachers, as they play a crucial role in shaping students' environmental awareness. Despite growing awareness of green practices in the education sector, limited research has explored the about teachers’ environmental behaviour, green knowledge, self-esteem and psychological well-being. This article presented a questionnaire designed to evaluate the level of green behaviour, green knowledge, self-esteem and well-being among school teachers in Malaysia and assess the reliability of the measurement instrument used. A quantitative approach was employed, and a structured questionnaire was distributed to 30 Malaysian school teachers. A pilot study was conducted, and reliability testing was measured by using Cronbach's alpha. This questionnaire consisting of 43 items was developed, demonstrating high internal consistency. The Cronbach’s alpha values for the green behaviour scales which includes individual practices, influencing others and organizational support were 0.928, 0.927 and 0.923, respectively, indicating excellent reliability. Additionally, the green knowledge, self-esteem and well-being scale yielded a Cronbach’s alpha value more than 0.9, signifying excellent reliability of the instrument. This questionnaire was found to be a viable instrument with high internal consistency to meet the study’s objectives. This study underscores the importance of integrating sustainability education with teacher well-being programs to enhance their engagement in green initiatives. Future research should explore longitudinal studies and broader demographic samples to further validate these findings and support the development of effective environmental policies in the Malaysian education sector.

The impact of globalization has led to the free entry of Western cultural influences into Indonesia. This development brings both positive and negative effects, especially for the younger generation in the field of education. Students who fail to respond wisely to globalization may experience moral degradation. As the leader in the school environment, the principal holds a significant responsibility in ensuring the success of educational implementation and plays an essential role in shaping students' character through school-based moral development programs to counter the negative effects of rapid globalization. This study focuses on three research questions: (1) What is the current condition of students' moral character at SMAIT Darul Rasyid Lampung Timur? (2) What is the role of the principal in shaping students’ character at SMAIT Darul Rasyid Lampung Timur? (3) What are the supporting and inhibiting factors in the moral development of students at SMAIT Darul Rasyid Lampung Timur? This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through documentation, observation, and interviews. The data were then analyzed by interpreting the collected information to draw meaningful conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the moral condition of students at SMAIT Darul Rasyid still presents several issues, particularly regarding student discipline in implementing the 5S culture (Smile, Greet, Salute, Politeness, and Courtesy). The principal plays a vital role in shaping students’ morals through school culture, which includes seven leadership roles: as an educator, by providing moral advice during flag ceremonies; as a manager, by implementing management functions (POAC) through programs such as Dhuha prayer, short religious talks (kultum), Qur'an recitation, prayer routines, and ceremonies aligned with the school’s vision and mission; as an administrator, by recording student violations in a disciplinary logbook; as a supervisor, by monitoring teachers’ implementation of daily prayers and student pledges; as a leader, by delegating authority and leading activities such as Dhuha prayer and flag ceremonies; as an innovator, by scheduling regular moral development activities; and as a motivator, by encouraging teachers and staff during ceremonial events. The supporting factors in students’ moral development through school culture include teacher involvement and community support, while the inhibiting factors involve students’ individual personalities and limited knowledge about moral and ethical values (akhlaqul karimah)

Literature has explored education and its values, highlighting the significance of experience in learning. However, a paucity of research has investigated the importance of teachers’ lifelong experiences in shaping their views toward education. Employing a collaborative autoethnographic methodology, this study attempts to provide insights into the significance of teachers’ lifelong experiences in shaping their views and their teacher identity. The narratives highlight the influence of the living environment and life events in shaping worldviews, along with affirmation of the individual’s agency in self-regulation. A dynamic accumulation of various lifelong experiences like losing Author 1’s father, war, and harassment at school shaped his teacher identity. Understanding the significance of this process helps teachers to appreciate their experiences and recognise their role in shaping students’ views and identifies. In conclusion, teachers’ socially constructed identity shapes their educational perspectives, reminding them of teachers’ role in shaping students’ experiences. This knowledge could be valuable in future teacher education programs and developing educational material for learners.

  • Al-Munawwarah: Journal of Islamic Education
  • Fuad Hasyim + 4 more

Islamic religious education plays a strategic role in shaping students’ character and religious behavior, particularly through the learning of fiqh ubudiyah, which is directly related to daily worship practices. However, differences in students’ levels of understanding often lead to variations in the implementation of worship. This study aims to describe the level of students’ understanding of fiqh ubudiyah at MA Al-Mahrusiyah 1 and to analyze its implications for their daily lives. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source and method triangulation. The findings indicate that students’ understanding of fiqh ubudiyah is generally categorized as good to very good, as reflected in their discipline in performing obligatory prayers, habituation of supplications and remembrance (dhikr), and the development of religious attitudes such as discipline and responsibility. Nevertheless, some students still require deeper understanding of the meaning and wisdom of worship to enhance consistency, particularly in practicing voluntary acts of worship. This study concludes that a strong understanding of fiqh ubudiyah plays a significant role in shaping students’ religious character. The contribution of this research lies in strengthening empirical evidence on the relationship between fiqh ubudiyah understanding and the practical implementation of worship within a pesantren-based madrasah context.
