DiStefano and Howie (Sentence Weight: An Alternative to the T-unit, English Education, 11 (1979), 98-101) have proposed sentence weight, a measurement based on Christensen's (1963) concept of hierarchical modification, as a more sophisticated measure for looking at syntactic complexity than the T-unit.
