Abstract

Tourism has been identified as a primary development sector in Ohio's effort to diversify and expand its economy. To encourage growth, the state government launched a comprehensive tourism planning effort in 1983. The initial focus of the new “Ohio, the heart of it all!” program was to encourage Ohioans to vacation within their own state. The next developmental phase will focus on enlarging the targeted visitor source regions to include neighbouring and selected other states and to attract foreign visitors.Major features of Ohio's resource base for tourism are analyzed and mapped. Major tourist regions and primary and secondary urban tourist centres are identified and for delimited.Ohio ranked 16th among the 50 states in the number of foreign visitors in 1983. A large proportion of those visitors are Canadians traversing the state. Others are attracted to the three larger metropolitan centres (Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus) or to those places possessing a particular attraction or hosting a special event...
