There is a demand for providing evidence on the effectiveness of research investments on the promotion of novice researchers' scientific productivity and production of research with new initiatives and innovations. We used a mixed method approach to evaluate the funding effect of the New Investigator Fund (NIF) by comparing scientific productivity between award recipients and non-recipients. We reviewed NIF grant applications submitted from 2004 to 2013. Scientific productivity was assessed by confirming the publication of the NIF-submitted application. Online databases were searched, independently and in duplicate, to locate the publications. Applicants' perceptions and experiences were collected through a short survey and categorized into specified themes. Multivariable logistic regression was performed. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) are reported. Of 296 applicants, 163 (55%) were awarded. Gender, affiliation, and field of expertise did not affect funding decisions. More physicians with graduate education (32.0%) and applicants with a doctorate degree (21.5%) were awarded than applicants without postgraduate education (9.8%). Basic science research (28.8%), randomized controlled trials (24.5%), and feasibility/pilot trials (13.3%) were awarded more than observational designs (p < 0.001). Adjusting for applicants and application factors, awardees published the NIF application threefold more than non-awardees (OR = 3.4, 95%, CI = 1.9, 5.9). The survey response rate was 90.5%, and only 58% commented on their perceptions, successes, and challenges of the submission process. These findings suggest that research investments as small as seed funding are effective for scientific productivity and professional growth of novice investigators and production of research with new initiatives and innovations. Further efforts are recommended to enhance the support of small grant funding programs.

The European Center of Science Productivity: Research Universities and Institutes in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom
 • Sep 1, 2017
 • Justin J W Powell + 1 more

Purpose Growth in scientific production and productivity over the 20th century resulted significantly from three major countries in European science – France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Charting the development of universities and research institutes that bolster Europe’s key position in global science, we uncover both stable and dynamic patterns of productivity in the fields of STEM, including health, over the 20th century. Ongoing internationalization of higher education and science has been accompanied by increasing competition and collaboration. Despite policy goals to foster innovation and expand research capacity, policies cannot fully account for the differential growth of scientific productivity we chart from 1975 to 2010. Approach and Research Design Our sociological neo-institutional framework facilitates explanation of differences in institutional settings, organizational forms, and organizations that produce the most European research. We measure growth of published peer-reviewed articles indexed in Thomson Reuters’ Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). Findings Organizational forms vary in their contributions, with universities accounting for nearly half but rising in France; ultrastable in Germany at four-fifths, and growing at around two-thirds in the United Kingdom. Differing institutionalization pathways created the conditions necessary for continuous, but varying growth in scientific production and productivity in the European center of global science. The research university is key in all three countries, and we identify organizations leading in research output. Originality/value Few studies explicitly compare across time, space, and different levels of analysis. We show how important European science has been to overall global science production and productivity. In-depth comparisons, especially the organizational fields and forms in which science is produced, are crucial if policy is to support research and development.

 • Jesús Ayala-Colqui + 1 more

Scientific production is an essential activity in universities, and this may have been compromised by the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is important to explore the aspects related to scientific research production during the pandemic, such as teaching performance, hours dedicated to research, academic degree, and gender. In this article, this analysis is conducted at a private university in Lima, on undergraduate professors of the Medicine program. Documentary analysis was applied to gather data on professors for later submission to logistic and gamma regression. A correlation was found among research hours, male researchers, academic degree, and scientific production. However, there is no connection between teaching performance and scientific production in both genders. Certainly, the connection between the research dynamics and gender disparities must be the focus of the discussion, especially in a pandemic context that strengthens domestic tasks and the gender roles attached to them. It is remarkable how the bibliography devoted to the analysis of the aspects related to production, usually avoids the gender variable in their research.

 • Ronald M Hernández + 4 more

This research aimed to characterize the Latin American scientific literature production on burnout between 2010 and 2020. A descriptive study was carried out with Latin American publications in journals indexed in the Scopus database as the unit of analysis. The variables studied were document frequency, scientific production by country, number of authors, institutional affiliation and scientific production by descriptor on burnout. The documentary type that appears the most is research papers with 85.03%. Out of a total of 154 authors affiliated to 163 Latin American institutions, the trend of scientific production by country shows that Brazil leads with 52.51% of the production in Latin America. The journals with the largest production were Revista da Escola de Enfermagem (n= 8), Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Trabalho and Revista Latino Americana de Enfermagem, with 22 documents each. Scientific production studies on an area of knowledge guide the research work. Thus, knowing what publications have been made on burnout will allow us to establish a Latin American research policy that will benefit the psychological discipline. However, it is necessary to increase the number of studies on burnout in Latin America in order to consolidate authorship collaboration and the literature on the subject. Received: 2 August 2021 / Accepted: 3 October 2021 / Published: 5 November 2021

Scientific Production of Psychology Program Directors from Peruvian Universities
 • Sep 30, 2021
 • Webology
 • Renzo Felipe Carranza Esteban + 3 more

Scientific production studies help describe the progress of scientific knowledge in a discipline. Therefore, those who hold director positions should promote scientific production and publication of scientific knowledge to address health problems. The objective was to identify the scientific production of psychology program directors from Peruvian universities. A search was made for all psychology programs in Peruvian universities. Thus, psychology program directors’ scientific production was identified and analyzed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases between 2000 and 2019. The search for the directors’ scientific production was conducted through ORCID, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, CTI Vitae (former DINA), Scopus and Web of Science. Thirty-eight psychology program directors were identified, five of them conducted a scientific publication, all of them from private universities. Of the articles assessed, 50% and 60% had a psychology program director as first author or corresponding author. In addition, 70% were original articles, 40% of which were analytical studies. Psychology program directors’ scientific production is limited. The articles published are mainly original and are concentrated in Latin American journals. It is likely that, since they have no experience in scientific production and publication, their leadership in promoting research is vulnerable.
