Abstract

Antioxidant plays an important role in the body's defense against various diseases, because antioxidant compounds were able to prevent the bad effects caused by free radicals. Phenolic compounds and flavonoids are known as natural antioxidant o from plants. Jalantir (Coryza sumatrensis) is known contain phenolic and flavonoid. The aim of this study was to determine total phenolic content, flavonoid content and antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The results showed that jalantir extract had a total phenolic content of 38.27 mg GAE/g and flavonoid content of 56.60 mg QE/g. Meanwhile, for the antioxidant activity, value of IC50 for extract, water fraction, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane were 9.76; 45.91; 60.75; and 74.31 ppm respectively. Jalantir extract was the strongest antioxidant category compared to other fractions.Keywords: phenolics, flavonoids, antioxidant, jalantir
