Abstract

Objective To review our management experience Of ovarian cysts torsion in neonates.Methods Eight female neonates(aged ranged from 2 hours to 30 days)with ovarian cyst torsion were treated between January of 2001 and June of 2006 in this institution. Seven patients (87.5%)were diagnosed as abdominal cysts by antenatal ultrasonography.The diagnoses included torsion of ovarian cysts(n=3),abdominal cystic teratoma(n=3),mesenteric cyst(n=1).Results Open operations were carried out in 6 cases,and laparoscopic operations in 2 cases.The eight ovarian cvsts rotated 360°to 1800°.Clockwise rotations were found in 5 cases and counter-clockwise rotations in 3.The size ranged from 2.5 cm×3.0 cm×2.0 cm to 6.0 cm×9.0 cm×10.0 cm.The pathological diagnosis included cystic teratoma(n=1),follicular cysts(n=4),hematoma and fibrous cystic wall with calcified focus(n=3).Conclusions Torsion of ovarian cyst was infrequent in neonates,but diagnosis can be established by antenatal uhrasonography.Early involvement of pediatric surgeons is conducive to the proper management.
