Abstract

Somehow, British writers and publishers can turn out quickly and effectively engaging and up-to-date books.<i>Topics in Gastroenterology</i>, based on a very recent course in postgraduate gastroenterology at Oxford and with references into 1974, is a small paperbound book about as current as it can be. Fine reading for the general internist and gastroenterologist, its topics range as widely as recent developments in gastrointestinal endoscopy, the synthesis and chemical nature of mucus, and the medical management of ulcerative colitis. Hans Krebs offers a chapter on the metabolism of ethanol which I found particularly helpful. With useful information from every contributor,<i>Topics in Gastroenterology</i>has a maturity that comes with reflection on experience and is no mere literature review. But don't rush out to buy a copy without recognizing that you will pay, in the United States at least, $39.50 for a 373-page softbound book. Its British price is £10, which
