Abstract

Honey bees play a vital role as key pollinators as they have evolved for millions of years along with flowering plants. Southeast Asia (SEA) is a homeland of at least nine honeybee species including an introduced species (the western honeybee) due to the tropical climate and abundance of flowering plants favoring the species fitness and survival. Hence, SEA is regarded a hotspot encompassing the greatest biodiversity of the honeybees in the world. The honeybees not only provide ecological services but also economical insects providing foods and traditional medicines, leading to incomes to the locals. Despite their role as important pollinators, honey bees have been at risk due to biotic and abiotic stressors. The conservation of honey bee diversity is a great challenge that requires collaborative efforts.
