Abstract

The behaviour of some important aspects of fan noise is both highly complex and paradoxical. By using a qualitative theory based on the work of Kaji and Okazaki, however, it is possible to predict the behaviour in the forward arc of the tone noise from the aerodynamic interaction of the fan rotor and stator. In this paper the theory is developed and extensive results from a fan operating at subsonic tip speeds (although designed for supersonic operation) are used to justify and illustrate the theory.
