Abstract

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease worldwide ( Samet, 2013 ) and it is estimated that more than 200 000 children in the UK start smoking every year ( Cancer Research UK, 2013 ). This study was commissioned by Public Health Wales and the local Tobacco Control Alliance to estimate the smoking prevalence of 11–12-year-old girls in North Wales and uncover current attitudes and behaviours in this age group to tobacco use. North Wales is a semi-rural region of the UK with a population of about 670 000, containing significant pockets of deprivation. The study results cast some doubt on smoking prevalence quoted in the research literature.
