Abstract
Daniel Allen’s column in the wake of the natural disaster in the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day is a gem (perspectives January 12). Not only does it throw much-needed light on the politics involved in our health these days (especially in the health promotion movement), but it also contains a much more profound message about our humanity. His question – ‘Where is the morality in putting the often self-inflicted health needs of comparatively privileged UK patients above those of the victims of one of the biggest natural disasters in living memory?’ – goes to the nub of the matter.
