Abstract

AbstractOpening Britain's first Science, Engineering and Technology Week, SET 7, Mr Waldegrave was, on 18 March 1994, the first serving cabinet minister to deliver one of The Royal Institution's Friday Evening Discourses. It is here published in full. His main theme was the value of science to society and how, since this was positive, its influence could be strengthend. He dealt with popular arguments against science as well as the creative spirit of science, and strongly criticised the Balkanisation of all culture today, proposing as a solution for the reunification of our culture: 'To communicate across the disciplines'.
