Abstract
A FEW YEARS AGO, a young woman to whom had just given an F for a very poor composition protested vigorously that my grading was unfair and that English composition itself was a waste of time. With confident indignation, she stated, I don't need no composition, 'cause I'm gonna be a retarded teacher. This particular misuse of language remains fixed in my mind, perhaps because meaning and expression were so thoroughly contradictory. Language misuse, of course, takes many forms.
