Abstract
Only recently have linguists and philosophers of language begun to apply other logical systems than ordinary predicate logic in the area of formal semantics for natural language. One of these ‘non-standard’ branches of logic — which deals with notions just as central as predication or quantification — is tense logic. The major motivation for developing tense logics was certainly to accommodate the temporal factor in everyday discourse within languages of propositional and predicate logic. In this paper I would like to examine to what extent existing systems of tense logic have been useful in describing and explaining tensed constructions in ordinary language, in particular, in English.
