TikTok Live is one of the top features of TikTok social media in user services. The widespread use of TikTok Live and young people who use social media are utilized by one of the candidates for President of the Republic of Indonesia, Anies Baswedan, in the General Election for President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2024. Anies Baswedan in the campaign conducted TikTok Live (28/12/2023) to attract young voters in the closest way to the daily activities of young people. Interestingly, Anies Baswedan's TikTok Live was responded organically with an account on social media X, Anies Bubble (30/12/2024), which refers to Anies and Bubble. Bubble refers to an application used by K-Pop fans to interact with their K-Pop Idols. The emergence of the X social media account @Aniesbubble is an effect resulting from the use of social media that benefits Anies Baswedan's image. Anies Baswedan's previous political image (during the 2017 DKI Jakarta Election) was “haunted” by the image of identity politics, which slowly changed after various campaign activities, one of which was live broadcasting through the TikTok application, especially for young voters. The occurrence of a change in the political image of Anies Baswedan during the General Election of the President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2024 through the campaign carried out, one of which is through the X @AniesBubble social media account.

  • Jan 1, 2018
  • Helen Uzoezi Emasealu + 1 more

Aim/Purpose: This paper, explored features of popular social media in promoting research activities for successful integration of information services on social media platforms. Background: Leisure, in the early days, was more aligned with reading and research activities and enjoyed a long term monopoly until the advent of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The society milieu is now accentuated with arrays of technological innovations and academic activities are, therefore, relegated to remnant time resulting from application and the use of ICTs. While reading and research are required more now than ever, social media, as components of ICTs, present their distractive features. However, studies have shown that social media could be incorporated to promote and communicate academic and research activities. Methodology: The paper analytically reviewed empirical literatures on information as obtained from innovative and sustained academic activities, which is a key to research development. The paper also discussed ways academic librarians could adapt and utilize popular social media such as facebook, whatsapp, instagram, badoo, skype, imo, wechat, twitter, blogs, flikr and youtube to provide Library services, Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), and communicate specialized literature search result, to promote purposeful networking, communication and transfer of information to support teaching and research activities. Contribution: The study reviewed the features of 21st century popular social media, and proffered ways of promoting research and academic culture through the adoption and use of social media platforms by information professionals. Findings: The paper assessed and listed the potentials of the features of social media as a communication tool in academic and research processes, making it possible for librarians to incorporate the features of these communication tools in the discharge of library services in areas such as reference services, professional collaboration, virtual help desk, consortium/resource sharing, selective communication and information, dissemination of knowledge, and information bank. Recommendations for Practitioners: The paper assessed and listed the potentials of the features of social media as a communication tool in academic and research processes, making it possible for librarians to incorporate the features of these communication tools in the discharge of library services in areas such as reference services, professional collaboration, virtual help desk, consortium/resource sharing, selective communication and information, dissemination of knowledge, and information bank. Recommendation for Researchers: With the exponential growth and use of social media as primary mode of communication, this paper elucidated how librarians could utilize such phenomenon to promote academic culture. Researchers are encouraged to capitalize on this opportunity for effective and timely research communication aimed at bridging the research communication gap between developed and developing nation and ultimately, for solving societal developmental problems. Impact on Society: The paper explored the features of popular social media that have the potentials that could be harnessed by librarians to create a 21st century technology enhanced learning arena aimed at bridging the research communication gap between developed and developing nations for societal growth. Future Research: The paper has added to the body of literature to serve as a pivot for researchers with focus on social media and concepts such as learning, research, academic achievement, library services and information profession.

  • Indah Suryawati + 2 more

The implementation of the 2024 Presidential Election cannot be separated from the dynamics of the use of social media as a medium for political communication, and Instagram is one of the social media used to convey political messages to the public. In this study, these political messages are manifested in the form of political narratives that compete with each other on social media. This research aims to (1) analyze the framing of the political narratives of Anies Baswedan and Prabowo Subianto uploaded on their Instagram accounts; and (2) how the ideas behind these political narratives are articulated. A qualitative approach was used in this study and Entman's framing analysis model was used as the method. The research findings reveal a fundamental conflict within the political narratives of Anies Baswedan and Prabowo Subianto. This contestation of political narratives is geared toward strengthening electability and capturing public attention. Prabowo's concept of sustainability demonstrates his desire to continue pro-people programs deemed successful during Jokowi's administration (Jokowinomics), such as various assistance programs for the underprivileged. Unlike Prabowo Subianto, Anies Baswedan emphasized ideas for change, such as eradicating poverty in Indonesia. The final results of the 2024 presidential election demonstrated that the political narrative regarding the need for sustainability successfully led Prabowo to victory.

Emotions following social media use and their relations to mental health in young people: An ecological momentary assessment study.
  • Mar 1, 2026
  • Journal of affective disorders
  • Aja Murray + 6 more

Recent theory predicts that young people's emotional reactions are important in the impact of social media use on their mental health. Here we explore this using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data measuring social media use and emotion within the 2-week 'Decades-to-minutes' (D2M) study (n=255). Dynamic structural equation modelling (DSEM) was used to examine the within-person relations between social media use and negative emotion (and vice versa), as well as the relations between negative emotions following social media use (defined as the within-person cross-lagged effect of social media use on negative affect) and depression. Results suggested a significant concurrent relation between social media use and negative emotion but no significant association between social media use and later negative emotion, or vice versa. They also suggested no significant relation between negative emotion following social media use and depression but a significant relation between social media inertia (stability of social media use from timepoint to timepoint) and depression. Our study illustrates the feasibility of capturing emotional dynamics in relation to social media use 'in ecological context' and their relations to mental health risk. It suggests that patterns of social media use (e.g., sustained versus intermittent use over and above levels of engagement) merit further research attention in terms of their association with mental health. Recommendations for future research include using shorter inter-prompt intervals to capture more immediate emotional reactions to social media use, and the development of more comprehensive EMA measures of social media use.

Do speech-language therapists support young people with communication disability to use social media? A mixed methods study of professional practices.
  • Dec 24, 2022
  • International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders
  • Nichola Shelton + 4 more

Social media is increasingly used by young people, including those with communication disability. To date, though, little is known about how speech-language therapists (SLTs) support the social media use of young people with communication disability. To explore what services SLTs provide to facilitate the social media use of young people with communication disability, including what these services look like, and the factors that impact SLTs' professional practices. A sequential mixed methods approach was employed including an online survey and in-depth semi-structured interviews. Participants were qualified practising SLTs in Australia with a caseload that included clients aged 12-16 years. Quantitative data were analysed with SPSS. A thematic analysis of qualitative data was conducted with NVivo. Survey responses from 61 SLTs were analysed. Interviews were conducted with 16 participants. Survey data indicated that SLTs do not systematically assess or treat young people's use of social media as part of their professional practice. Interview data revealed that where SLTs do support young people's use of social media, they transfer knowledge and practices typically used in offline contexts to underpin their work supporting clients' use of social media. In terms of factors that affect SLTs' practices, three major themes were identified: client/family factors, SLT factors, and societal factors. While young people with communication disability may desire digital participation in social media spaces, SLTs' current professional practices do not routinely address this need. Professional practice guidelines would support SLTs' practices in this area. Future research should seek the opinions of young people with communication disability regarding their use of social media, and the role of SLTs in facilitating this. What is already known on the subject Young people with communication disability use social media, but digital inequality means that they may not do so to the same extent as their typically developing peers. Services targeting a young person's social media use is within the SLT scope of practice. Whether or not SLTs routinely address the social media use of young people with communication disability as part of their professional practice is unknown. What this study adds to existing knowledge This study found that SLTs in Australia do not systematically provide professional services targeting young people's use of social media. When services do address a young person's use of social media, knowledge and practices typically used by SLTs in offline contexts are adapted to support their work targeting online social media contexts. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? This study indicates that SLTs should consider a range of factors when deciding whether to address a young person's social media use. Adapting existing offline professional practices to online environments could support SLTs' work in providing services targeting social media use. Professional practice guidelines would support SLTs' work facilitating the social media use of young people with communication disability.

Social Media and Online Digital Technology Use Among Muslim Young People and Parents: Qualitative Focus Group Study
  • May 10, 2022
  • JMIR Pediatrics and Parenting
  • Caitlin H Douglass + 5 more

BackgroundDigital technology and social media use are common among young people in Australia and worldwide. Research suggests that young people have both positive and negative experiences online, but we know little about the experiences of Muslim communities.ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the positive and negative experiences of digital technology and social media use among young people and parents from Muslim backgrounds in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.MethodsThis study involved a partnership between researchers and a not-for-profit organization that work with culturally and linguistically diverse communities. We adopted a participatory and qualitative approach and designed the research in consultation with young people from Muslim backgrounds. Data were collected through in-person and online focus groups with 33 young people aged 16-22 years and 15 parents aged 40-57 years. Data were thematically analyzed.ResultsWe generated 3 themes: (1) maintaining local and global connections, (2) a paradoxical space: identity, belonging and discrimination, and (3) the digital divide between young Muslims and parents. Results highlighted that social media was an important extension of social and cultural connections, particularly during COVID-19, when people were unable to connect through school or places of worship. Young participants perceived social media as a space where they could establish their identity and feel a sense of belonging. However, participants were also at risk of being exposed to discrimination and unrealistic standards of beauty and success. Although parents and young people shared some similar concerns, there was a large digital divide in online experiences. Both groups implemented strategies to reduce social media use, with young people believing that having short technology-free breaks during prayer and quality family time was beneficial for their mental well-being.ConclusionsPrograms that address technology-related harms must acknowledge the benefits of social media for young Muslims across identity, belonging, representation, and social connection. Further research is required to understand how parents and young people can create environments that foster technology-free breaks to support mental well-being.

  • Orsolya Kiss + 14 more

Introduction In today’s digital landscape, social media features prominently in adolescents’ social interactions and information consumption, influencing their development, potentially altering brain processes. Research shows a bidirectional relationship between social media use and both sleep health and brain activities, especially in executive control and reward processing. These neural developments are pivotal in adolescent behavioral and psychological growth, with sleep being crucial yet underexplored in the context of reward, social (media) behaviors. Methods This study investigated the reciprocal links between social media use, self-reported sleep duration, and brain activation in 6,516 adolescents (ages 10-14 years, 46.2% female) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study®. Sleep duration was assessed from the Munich Chronotype questionnaire, and recreational social media use through the Youth Screen Time Survey. Brain activities were analyzed from fMRI scans during the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task, targeting regions associated with reward processing. The study used three different sets of models, switching predictors and outcomes each time, to examine the reciprocal relationships between sleep duration, brain activation, and social media use, and their interactions. Age, COVID-19 pandemic timing (before/during), and socio-demographic characteristics were included in the models. Results Shorter sleep duration correlated with greater social media usage (p<.001). Notably, interactions between sleep duration and brain activation in the cingulate gyrus (p=.021), inferior frontal gyrus (p=.009), and precuneus (p=.008) predicted social media use. In predicting brain activity, interactions between sleep duration and social media use emerged as significant for the inferior (p=.008) and middle frontal gyrus(p=.003). For sleep duration predictions, interactions were important between social media use and brain activation spanning seven areas, including the cingulate gyrus (p=.039), hippocampus (p=.005), insula (p=.015), inferior frontal gyrus (p=.001), middle frontal gyrus (p=.003), precuneus (p=.038) and the superior frontal gyrus (p=.028). Conclusion These results highlight distinct relationships between sleep, social media, and activity across frontolimbic brain regions, key for executive control and reward processing. Such insights deepen our understanding of how individual's unique neural sensitivities to digital technology use and sleep necessity interact in adolescents. Future longitudinal studies based on these findings could pave the way for developing more nuanced, individualized interventions. Support (if any) NIH: U01DA041022 and R01MH128959.

  • Communications
  • Sindu Lintang Ismoyo + 1 more

This study aims to analyze the use of satire communication and symbolism in Anies Baswedan's social media posts, particularly on Instagram, to understand how he communicates political messages and criticism indirectly. The focus of this study is on three viral photos: one of Anies Baswedan reading the book How Democracies Die, another of Anies Baswedan with the band Nidji doing a sound check at the Jakarta International Stadium, and a third of Anies Baswedan reading Big Debt Crises. This research uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to identify the meanings contained in the symbols or signs in these three photos. The results show that Anies Baswedan employs Horatian satire—light and clever criticism that avoids direct confrontation—to address political issues. The posts convey critiques of the state of democracy and economic policies in Indonesia, while also reinforcing his image as an intellectual and thoughtful leader. Each post strategically combines personal image with broader political messages, allowing Anies to subtly challenge the current government and respond to criticism. This study provides insights into how Anies Baswedan's social media communication functions as a form of political satire, blending personal relaxation with critical commentary on national issues.
