Abstract

In November 2012, The Australian Sociological Association (TASA) published Sociology: Threshold Learning Outcomes, a document outlining the minimum outcomes of bachelor graduates majoring in sociology. TASA contacted all known Australian sociology degree programs with the draft threshold learning outcomes (TLOs) and received feedback and comments from across the nation. According to the TASA document The TLOs for Sociology will constitute the minimum (threshold) outcomes a graduate of a Sociology major or degree would be expected to achieve by the completion of their bachelor degree. The development and promulgation of TLOs represent a shift in regulatory practice from considerations of the standard of inputs in tertiary education to a focus on academic outcomes. In the Australian context, TLOs outline the minimum outcomes regarding discipline-specific knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities, but they do not constitute a national curriculum and do not prescribe the ways they shall be achieved.
