Abstract

Objective To explore a novel quantitative method which can be used to analyze diverse three-dimensional thumb tip motions. Methods Twenty-five normal subjects were enrolled in this experiment. The markers of the three-dimension motion analysis system were affixed to their thumb tips and trapezium bones. With the wrist and the other 4 fingers fixed,three-dimensional coordinates of the moving thumb tips and trapezium bones were recorded when the subjects were asked to actively execute maximal and minimal circumduction of the thumb tip. Maximal movements of the thumb tips were reconstructed to calculate their maximal volumes of workspace. All experiments were repeated in 3 separate testing days. Results In the test-retest,the interclass correlation coefficient and coefficient of variation of the volume of trapeziometacarpal (TMC)joint were 0.902 and 4.74% respectively. The mean volume of the workspace of the thumb tip was 131126.4 mm3 and 96414.16 mm3 respectively. Regressive function expressed V=0.04913+7.706l2 for male groups,V=0.05213+7.25812 for female groups, and determinate coefficient(R2) was 0.98. Conclusion It is quantitative, accurate, and feasible to measure thumb tip motion with this three-dimensional motion analysis system. Curve regressive relation exits between the volume of the workspace of the thumb tip and the total thumb length. Key words: Thumb; Joint; Kinetics; Workspace
