Three decades of research on molecular genetic characteristics of Echinococcus spp.: a bibliometric study.

Research on the molecular genetics of Echinococcus has advanced significantly owing to its relevance in understanding genetic variation, host-parasite interactions, and the transmission of Echinococcus species. A bibliometric analysis was performed using RStudio (Bibliometrix) and VOSviewer to evaluate molecular genetic research on Echinococcus spp. published between 1985 and 2025. Data were extracted from Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Europe PMC, and ProQuest. The analysis revealed a steady rise in publications on Echinococcus molecular genetics, accelerating from the early 2000s and peaking around 2017, with a slight decline after 2023, reflecting fluctuations in research activity. Comparative analysis showed Echinococcus consistently surpassed Schistosoma, Taenia, and soil-transmitted helminths, peaking at 60 articles in 2020-2021. Early publications achieved high mean Total Citations (TC) per year, followed by a stable trend, indicating lasting impact. Leading journals included Parasitology Research (Germany; 70 articles, H-index 114), Veterinary Parasitology (Netherlands; 62, H-index 150), Parasitology (UK; 53, H-index 173), Acta Tropica (Netherlands; 34, H-index 122), and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases (USA; 28, H-index 172). Tehran University of Medical Sciences (54 articles) led institutions. Influential authors included D. P. McManus and T. Romig. Multinational studies (484 publications) had higher citations than single-country (474). Iran (121), China (116), and Italy (53) led global contributions, emphasising collaboration, genotyping, phylogeny, and veterinary applications. This bibliometric study underscores the evolving trends in Echinococcus molecular genetics, providing valuable insights for researchers and stakeholders to guide future investigations and collaborative strategies in controlling echinococcosis.

A bibliometric analysis of evidence-based medicine publications of Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute of Iran in Scopus Database.

The aim of this study is to identify patterns in information sharing between Evidence-Based Medicine journals to determine key evidence dissemination areas from co-authorship, co-occurrence and citation networks and to provide a scientific horizon for improving the dissemination of Evidence Based Medicine Research in Iran. And show the trend of Evidence Based Medicine research at Endocrinology & Metabolism Research Institute (EMRI), Tehran University of Medical Sciences. This was a bibliometric study. Scopus database was used for retrieving and analyzing the publications. We analyzed the relationship between co-authorship and citation and visualized them. Co-occurrence keywords in EBM articles in the Scopus database, and developed subject charts and research field relationship. Journal of Diabetes and Metabolism Disorders (GDMD)contains a large collection of information of relevance to Evidence Based Medicine and its contents are widely cited across many journals in Iran. The investigation of co-authorship network showed that 121 EBM articles from 191 authors, Akbar Soltani has the highest citations in EBM research and he is a pioneer in this subject area. The scientific contributions of GDMD to EBM is mostly in disease control and therapy. An Evidence Based Medicine Research Center focused more on these areas such as education, treatment and research, Evidence Based Clinical Practice, Evidence Based Policymaking and to improve clinical reasoning and clinical thinking. In co-occurrence author keywords, the highest publications were in osteoporosis. From the main journals that had published the most were the journal of diabetes and metabolic disorders (GDMD) .From citation organizations, EMRI contains large collections of information of relevance to EBM and are widely cited across 171 organizations in Iran. An Evidence Based Medicine Research Center scientific production contain several key clusters. With authors, organizations and subject area being the source of the majority of articles. The EBM co-authorship author's network in Iran is comprised of 191 authors in 23 clusters in major groups, the largest and most productive in this network is led by Akbar Soltani with Bagher Larijani,Shirin Hasani Ranjbar, Arash Moayyari, Arash Hossen-nazhad, Iraj Nabipour, Ramin Heshmat ,Hamideh Mosapour,Azadeh Aletaha, ,Mahbobeh Khabaz- Mafinejad as central members. The findings shows that EBM research topics are widely communicated to other medical fields like osteoporosis and obesity and have begun to shift from Evidence Based clinical Practice to Evidence based management.

Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology: A Bibliometric and Altmetric Analysis from 2005 to 2022.

This study aimed to present a bibliometric and altmetric Analyses of the Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (IJAAI). The citation performance and altmetric data were extracted from Scopus and Altmetric Explorer, respectively. Analyses were done using SPSS 26, Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. The results of the bibliometric analysis revealed that IJAAI had experienced respectable growth. Among the total citations, 4746 citations belong to the first decade (2005-2014) and 3,035 citations belong to the second (2015-2022). The findings demonstrated the significance of IJAAI among Iranian researchers. Pourpak, Z (66; 6.57%) is the top-producing author in IJAAI. The examination of research institutions reveals that the Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) is ranked first. The most highly cited article in IJAAI over the past 18 years is a review article which has received 138 citations. IJAAI is ranked first at the citing source and journal level, with the most citations (249 citations) to IJAAI. Iran has collaborated with 13 other countries. Overall, the analysis of co-occurred keywords indicates that IJAAI authors have used the following three high-frequency and important keywords: Asthma (162), Inflammation (48), and Multiple sclerosis (40). Co-citation analysis results demonstrated that a total of 6,718 sources were cited in this journal. The results of the altmetric analysis show that IJAAI has a reasonably low presence across various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia, Mendeley, news and blogs. This study aids researchers in exploring and identifying emerging trends in the fields of allergy, asthma, and immunology.

Nursing Research in Iran: Bibliometric and Visualization Analysis

Background. A comprehensive understanding of Iran's nursing system, its future trajectory, and the identification and comparison of scientific outputs in nursing research at the national level are of great significance. Therefore, this study was conducted to bibliometrically analyze Iranian articles in nursing using the Web of Science database. Methods. This study employed bibliometric analysis techniques. The research population consists of scientific outputs by Iranian researchers in nursing, indexed in the Web of Science citation database. Data were collected on October 8, 2023, from the Web of Science Core Collection, and relevant publications were screened from 1972 (the beginning of recorded data) to October 8, 2023 (the date of data collection). In the following, Excel and Biblioshiny software were used for bibliometric analysis, and VOS Viewer software was used to draw scientific maps. Results. A total of 3,527 documents were retrieved. The results indicated an upward trend in publication growth, with the earliest record dating back to 1972. The highest number of publications was recorded in 2021, with 515 documents. Original research articles constituted the majority of publications, while single-author documents were limited. Overall, 20.44% of the articles involved international collaboration. Fazlollah Ahmadi and Isa Mohammadi were identified as the most prolific authors in nursing research, while Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, and Tabriz University of Medical Sciences were recognized as the top three institutions in nursing-related scientific output. In terms of international collaboration networks in nursing research, the highest level of cooperation was observed between Iran and the United States, followed by Iran and Australia. Keyword analysis revealed that "care," "health," and "nurses" were the most frequently used terms among researchers. Additionally, co-occurrence network analysis showed the highest co-occurrence between the keywords "Iran" and "nursing," with 147 occurrences. Conclusion. The continuous growth of nursing research in Iran highlights its significant role in regional and global healthcare knowledge. This bibliometric study identified key trends, including the rise in international collaborations, the impact of prolific contributors, and a diverse research focus. Strengthening institutional support and expanding global partnerships are essential to sustain and enhance this trajectory. Such efforts will reinforce evidence-based practices and improve the quality of nursing education and healthcare delivery in Iran.

Genetic polymorphism and the risk of diabetic foot: a bibliometric analysis from 2011-2021

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) has been associated with genetic and environmental factors, which could potentially have a role in DFU development. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes linked to DFU, including inflammation. Bibliometric studies on the SNP on genes affecting DFU still have not been evaluated. This study aims to depict bibliographically and understand the topic trend of genetic polymorphism and the risk of DFU publications. A bibliometric methodology was applied in this study. The data were extracted through the Scopus database from 2011 to 2021. VOS viewer was used to classify and summarize Scopus articles. The 35 articles were evaluated. India topped the list of countries with the most publications, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences was the primary institution. Singh K and his team were the first contributing authors with 44 citations. Keywords analysis indicated that the research hotspots were DFU, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), diabetic foot ulcers, polymorphisms, hypoxia, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), diabetic foot, diabetes mellitus, and oxidative stress. This study summarizes the current state, trends in genetic polymorphism and risk with DFU research. It may provide researchers with insight into the genetic polymorphism and risk associated with DFU research, as well as useful information for identifying possible collaborators and partner institutions.

Global Research Trends on Inflammation in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Insights From Bibliometric and Scientometric Analysis

BackgroundPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex reproductive-endocrine disorder with an ambiguous etiology, presenting significant challenges for clinical management. Recently, inflammation has been identified as a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of PCOS, attracting considerable attention within the scientific community. In this study, we used bibliometric and visualization analyses to investigate the research hotspots and developmental trends associated with inflammation in PCOS to obtain valuable insights for future research.MethodsThe core collection of the Web of Science database was accessed to retrieve literature on inflammation and PCOS published from 2004 to 2024. Bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed using software tools including CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and GraphPad Prism. The analysis focused on publication year, country, institution, journal, author, publication, and literature keywords.ResultsFrom January 1, 2004, to July 25, 2024, a total of 2568 articles were published on PCOS and inflammation, which involved 10,920 authors from 2902 research institutions across 92 countries. The volume of literature in this field had consistently increased, with significant contributions from the United States and China. Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the Egyptian Knowledge Base were identified as the most active and influential institutions. “Gynecological Endocrinology” was the leading journal in terms of the number of relevant articles published. Among the published authors, Asemi and Zatollah had the highest publication counts, while Azziz R.'s work received the most citations. Commonly occurring keywords included insulin resistance, obesity, and oxidative stress. Recent literature clustering and keyword analysis identified that resveratrol, granulosa cells, follicular fluid, gut microbiota, and probiotics are current research hotspots in this field. Gut microbiota and infertility are recognized as significant directions for future research.ConclusionsThis bibliometric analysis provides a detailed overview of research on inflammation and PCOS, highlighting its importance in disease progression and the potential for therapeutic targeting of inflammatory pathways.

50 years of Iranian clinical, biomedical, and public health research: a bibliometric analysis of the Web of Science Core Collection (1965-2014)

BackgroundA substantial growth has been reported in Iran’s number of clinical, biomedical, and public health research publications over the last 30 years. It is of interest to investigate whether this quantitative growth has also led to a larger number of papers with a high citation impact; to explore where the capacity for performing research lies; and which fields/institutions are lagging behind.MethodsThis was a bibliometric study. Web of Science Core Collection and its different tools were used for retrieving and analysing the publications. Information about the journals was found on Journal Citation Reports®. Different types of collaborations across the highly-cited papers was investigated based on the affiliations, the characteristics of the language of the authors’ names, and the authors’ study and work backgrounds.ResultsIran’s number of clinical, biomedical, and public health research publications has substantially increased since 2000, a surge was seen in 2007, and the figure reached a peak in 2011. 11% of the publications were in Pharmacology Pharmacy; and the majority originated in Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Six of the 10 journals that had published the most were Iranian journals. H-index of publications had also increased over time (almost doubled between 2000 and 2010). 30.9% of the most-cited publications had only relied on Iranian resources (including 48 publications); had been published in journals with impact factors ranging between 0.4 and 8.3; and the majority were original basic sciences research.ConclusionsIn Iran, a great capacity for research lies in clinical, biomedical, and public health fields which can be strengthened with further investment. It is important to use this capacity in a way that would align with the national population health needs. It is also essential to consider the limitations of only relying on bibliometric tools for assessing health research activities. Finally, the Iranian science policy-makers are encouraged to (i) support the researchers and institutions that have proved research capacity; (ii) direct further resources towards research areas and/or institutions that are lagging behind; (iii) facilitate further international collaboration with the academics and/or institutions that have shown the capacity for conducting successful research projects with Iran.

The Mediterranean-dietary approaches to stop hypertension diet intervention for neurodegenerative delay (MIND) diet: a bibliometric analysis.

The MIND diet is a healthy dietary pattern that has some benefits for many health outcomes. Our study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the MIND diet, identifying leading edges and hotspots to provide a reference for future research. The research on the MIND diet was gathered from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. For bibliometric analysis, VOSviewer 1.6.16 and the WOSCC Online Analysis Platform were utilized. In total, this comprehensive investigation encompassed 171 documents in the field of the MIND diet. The publications are globally distributed, with contributions from 953 authors across 362 institutions in 37 countries/regions, and published in 94 journals. The United States leads with 72 publications, and Iran and the People's Republic of China also show notable engagement with 28 and 19 publications, respectively. Rush University stands out with 21 publications, followed by Harvard University and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, demonstrating their substantial contributions to this field. Martha Clare Morris is a key figure with 10 publications, alongside Klodian Dhana and Puja Agarwal, each contributing 9 publications, highlighting their influence in the MIND diet research. The journal "Nutrients" is a major publication venue with 20 related articles, followed by "Frontiers in Nutrition" and "Journal of Nutrition Health Aging," reflecting their crucial roles in advancing knowledge about the MIND diet. The first high-cited publication was published in Alzheimers & Dementia and conducted by Martha Clare Morris, which focuses on the MIND diet's relationship with Alzheimer's disease prevention and cognitive decline and emphasizes the diet's neuroprotective potential, highlighting how even moderate adherence can substantially reduce Alzheimer's risk and slow cognitive decline. In conclusion, this is the first comprehensive bibliometric study that quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed the publications in the field of the MIND diet. The MIND diet may be a promising dietary pattern for dementia. However, the current evidence is restricted and highlights the urgency and necessity of further research to investigate the efficacy of this diet for cognitive function. In addition, the MIND diet may have some benefits for other health outcomes, including CVDs, cancer, and diabetes. The number of studies in the field of the MIND diet is limited. More studies are needed, and will give us more knowledge about the MIND diet to improve human health, especially for dementia.

Global trends in research of nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a bibliometric and visualization analysis.

This study aims to assess the current research status, focus areas, and developmental trends in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) through a bibliometric analysis. Articles focusing on NPC published from 2000 to 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used for bibliometric and visual analysis. A total of 14516 related publications were retrieved. There has been a steady increase in the number of NPC-related publications from 2000 to 2023. China was the dominant country in this field with 8948 papers (61.64%), followed by the USA (2234, 15.39%). Sun Yat-sen University was the most influential institution, while Ma J was the most prolific author. Furthermore, Head And Neck-journal For The Sciences And Specialties Of The Head And Neck was the most prolific journal. International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics had the highest total citation counts. "Introduction chemotherapy", "Concurrent chemotherapy", "Epithelial-mesenchymal transition", "Cancer stem cells", "MicroRNAs", "LncRNA", "Exosomes", and "Biomarker" were the most common keywords. The reference "Chen YP, 2019, Lancet" had the highest citations and strong outbreak value. The past two decades have witnessed a significant increase in research on NPC. The optimization of treatment mode is the most widely studied aspect at present. The mechanism of occurrence and development and the most favorable diagnostic and therapeutic targets are the research hotspots in the future.

Global research trends and developments in female infertility: a systematic bibliometric analysis and network visualization of 9288 studies

ObjectiveFemale infertility has remained a significant health issue over the years. This study was conducted to analyze the key bibliometric indicators and plot the global research on female infertility.MethodsA systematic bibliometric study was designed. The Web of Science Core Collection and MEDLINE databases were used to retrieve the relevant studies on the subject. The following search keywords were used: “female infertility” OR “women infertility” OR “woman infertility” OR “fertility in women” OR “fertility in woman” OR “infertile women” OR “infertile woman” OR “sterile women” OR “sterile woman” in the topic field. The retrieved records were downloaded in plain text and BibTeX formats. The downloaded datasets were imported into the R package to remove the duplicates and perform the bibliometric analysis and science mapping.ResultsA total of 9288 articles were included in the final analysis. These articles were written by 39,453 authors and were published in 1898 journals between 1939 and 2024. The international co-authorship was 13.34%, whereas the annual growth rate was 8.01%. The most frequently published year was 2024 (n = 698). The top leading journal was “Fertility and Sterility” (n = 802), whereas the most contributing author was Wang Y (n = 65). The most frequently appeared author keywords other than search terms were endometriosis, in vitro fertilization, pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometrium, and laparoscopy. The top leading institutions were Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Fudan University, and Shandong University, whereas Yale University, the University of California San Francisco, and Fudan University had the highest betweenness centrality score. China was the leading country in terms of single corresponding author countries, whereas the United States of America (USA) was the most cited country. Moreover, China had the strongest collaboration with the USA.ConclusionThe current study provides a comprehensive assessment of female infertility studies over the past eight decades. Recent trend topics during the last decade were infertile women, ovary syndrome, polycystic ovary, in vitro fertilization, and embryo transfer. The well-developed and central themes were in vitro fertilization, randomized control studies, embryo transfer, assisted reproductive technology, pregnancy outcomes, and live birth.

A bibliometric analysis on the solid waste-related research from 1982 to 2013 in Iran

A bibliometric analysis was used to assess the trend of solid waste-related publications produced by Iran and indexed in Scopus from 1982 to 2013. The study aims to analyze the distribution of languages, countries, institutes, journals, author keywords, authorship pattern and co-authorship relationships. The publication outputs showed an exponential trend (R 2 = 0.98) and increased by 45.3 % per year from 1982 to 2011. It was received with a decreasing trend to 44 papers at the end of 2013. Journal of Environmental Studies published the most papers. University of Tehran (25 %), Islamic Azad University (8.24 %), Tehran University of Medical Sciences (7.35 %) played active roles in the publication and Abduli MA was the most productive author (9.12 %) in this field. The English language was dominant language of all publications (88.24 %). The appearance of keywords namely “Heavy metals”, “landfill leachate” and “site selection” reveals the importance of release of heavy metals through landfill leachates and site selection issues in Iran. A downward trend in the number of publications is likely to be continued in future years. The highest cooperation was found among the capital universities in Iran and other institutions had a minor role in the production of articles. It is hoped that transferring the experiences by main universities and starting up teamwork activities may increase the number of researches in this field. It is expected that this study could be the basis for a better understanding of development of researches related to solid waste in Iran.

A global bibliometric analysis on Kawasaki disease research over the last 5 years (2017–2021)

BackgroundKawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology that mainly affects children. We aim to conduct a bibliometric analysis to explore the latest research hotspots and trends of KD.MethodBy using the keywords “Kawasaki disease,” “Kawasaki syndrome”, and “Mucocutaneous Lymph Node Syndrome,” the Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus databases were searched for publications related to KD from 2017 to 2021. Author, country and journal submissions were classified and evaluated using Biblioshiny software (using R language). VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) was used to visualize the relevant network relationships.ResultAccording to the search strategy, 5,848 and 6,804 KD studies were published in WOS and Scopus, respectively. The results showed an overall increasing trend in the number of publications and citations during the study period. The three most influential institutions in the WOS were St. Marianna University, Kawasaki Medical School and The University of Tokyo in Japan, while in Scopus, Harvard Medical School, University of California and Tehran University of Medical Sciences were the most influential institutions. The most influential authors of the two databases are Goodman SG, Kazunori Kataoka, and Takeshi Kimura of the WOS and Marx Nikolau and Wang Y, Burns JC, and Newburger JW of the Scopus, respectively. And Scientific Reports and Frontiers in Pediatrics were the most critical journals. The most cited documents were the WOS document by McCrindle et al. and the Scopus document by Benjamin et al. published in 2017, while the keywords in the last few years were focused on “COVID-19,” “multisystem inflammatory syndrome,” and “pandemic.”ConclusionThis bibliometric analysis summarizes for the first time the research progress in KD (2017–2021), providing a qualitative and quantitative assessment of KD research bibliometric information. In the field, researchers mainly from Japan and USA are dominant, followed by China. It is recommended to pay close attention to the latest hot spots, such as “COVID-19” and “multisystem inflammatory syndrome.” These results provide a more intuitive and convenient way for researchers to obtain the latest information on KD.

Scientific Exploration: Bibliometric Analysis of the Dynamics of Data Science Education Development based on Scopus (2013-2023)

This study aims to map the development and direction of Data Science Education research in Scopus indexed publications. This research uses bibliometric analysis techniques to explore all publications indexed in the Scopus database on Data Science Education from 2013 to 2023. The data were analyzed using Excel and R/R-Studio. VOSviewer was used to perform a visual analysis of the simultaneous occurrence of keywords and document citations. The authors found 1,987 publications that matched the defined function, subject, and criteria. The results of this study show an annual growth rate of 4%, with the most publications on Data Science Education in 2017 and 2018. The United States is the country that contributes the most publications with affiliation from Tehran University Of medical Sciences. Brownel, S.E. became the most productive author in the theme of Data Science Education Bibliometric analysis conducted is limited to Scopus data. The keywords such as Covid -19, Professional Development, Sustainability, E-learning, and Academic Achievement are keywords that are still blurry or rarely researched. Other national and international databases were not taken into account in this study. This research presents a brief overview of the literature that can be accessed by researchers working in the field of Data Science Education and provides recommendations for future research.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Aloe vera in Wound Healing

People have used Aloe vera for a variety of traditional medical applications. A. vera has been proven in numerous studies to play a key function in wound healing. Although there are many reviews on this topic, bibliometric analysis is not found in the literature. This study uses bibliometric analysis to evaluate the influence and relevance of the countries, journals, organizations, and authors that have made the most contributions to this topic. Scopus database was used to gather bibliographic data on relevant studies. A total of 417 published articles between 1981 and 2023 were selected. VOSviewer version 1.6.18 was used to conduct a bibliometric analysis of these papers. On the topic of A. vera as a wound healing agent, Tehran University of Medical Science from Thailand was the most productive institution and Journal of Ethnopharmacology was the most productive journal. India was the most productive and collaborative country. The spotlight of the recent papers was the use of biotechnology techniques and drug-delivery strategies of A. vera in wound healing. Developing formulation using various drug-delivery methods followed by in vivo preclinical and clinical studies of this particular topic were potential to be explored.

Trends and developments in health systems modeling: a bibliometric analysis

IntroductionHealth systems modeling is increasingly used to address complex health challenges and inform policy. Despite its growing importance, the field remains dynamic, with evolving research themes, and global contributions. This study maps the evolution of the field, identifies leading publications, authors, institutions, and countries, and highlights emerging themes to guide future research and collaboration.MethodsA bibliometric analysis was conducted on March 10, 2023, using the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection for 1992–2023. The search string was “health system*” AND “modelling” OR “modeling.” Records were analyzed with Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to compute publication trends, authorship patterns, institutional and country-level contributions, international collaboration, and thematic developments.ResultsA total of 2,023 records were retrieved. The annual publication growth rate was 7.53%, with an average of 9.35 co-authors per article and 37.67% international co-authorship. Leading journals included The Lancet and PLOS One, while prominent authors were Blakely T. and Hay S.I. Key contributing institutions were the Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the University of Washington. The United States and the United Kingdom were the most productive countries. Thematic analysis revealed prominent and emerging topics such as “health systems,” “modeling,” “predictive modeling,” and “systems dynamics” suggesting promising directions for future research.DiscussionFindings indicate a dynamic and expanding research landscape with strong international collaboration and concentrated contributions from high-impact journals, established authors, and leading institutions. The study highlights epidemiology and predictive modeling as promising directions for future research and identifies opportunities for international collaboration and publication. The analysis is limited by reliance on a single database (WoS); further studies should integrate additional databases to improve coverage and deepen the findings. The results can inform decisions on collaboration opportunities, suitable publication venues, and key research gaps in health systems modeling.

Global research trends of nanotechnology for pain management.

Background: Nanotechnology has been increasingly used in healthcare during recent years. However, the systematic evaluation of research on nanotechnology for pain management is lacking. In this study, we employed a bibliometric approach to examine the status of the research and global trends of nanotechnology in relation to pain management. Methods: We selected relevant papers published in the Web of Science Core Collection database between 2013 and 2022 using search terms related to nanotechnology and pain management. Subsequently, the following bibliographic information was collected: publication year, originating country/region, affiliated authors and institutions, published journal, references cited, citation frequency, and keywords. The bibliometric software programs VOSViewer and CiteSpace were employed to obtain bibliometric statistics and perform visual analysis. Results: A total of 2680 papers were retrieved. The number of publications in the field of nanotechnology for pain management has been increasing annually since 2013. China had the highest number of published papers, whereas the United States led in total citations. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most prolific institution, while the Tehran University of Medical Sciences had the highest overall citations. Furthermore, De Paula was the most prolific author. Papers associated with nanotechnology for pain management were mainly published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutics, and the International Journal of Nanomedicine. Keyword analysis showed that "in-vitro" and "drug-delivery" appeared most frequently, with the top 10 common keywords comprising nanoparticles, pain, in-vitro, drug-delivery, delivery, release, inflammation, neuropathic pain, formulation, and expression. Lastly, the latest emerging keyword was "electrochemical sensor". Conclusion: Research on applying nanotechnology for pain management is growing steadily. China is the top country in terms of number of publications, with institutions under the Chinese Academy of Sciences making significant contributions to this field. "In-vitro" and "drug-delivery" are the current hotspots in this area, with "electrochemical sensor" as the latest topic at the research forefront. However, national and inter-institutional collaborations should be strengthened to enable patients with pain disorders to benefit from nanotechnology implementation in pain management.
