Abstract

The present study describes thin layer chromatography of corticosteroids on two-phase conventional partition systems originally introduced by zaffaroni and bush. The celite-gypsum thin layer as well as the stationary phase was applied by spray. Mobility of selected corticosteroids was examined in 20 different partition systems on 300 ascending thin layer chromato plates. Corticosteroid groups differing in one oxygen function were readily separated in both zaffaroni and bush systems. Separation within groups was also feasible, cortisol being delineated from cortisone as well as from tetrahyorocortisol. Rf values for various corticosteroids both on the same or separate plates were quite reproducible. Comparisons with reported values for paper chromatographic separations agreed closely.
