Abstract

The solubilities of several oligoglycines and oligoleucines have been measured in water and in guanidinium chloride and urea solutions. Gibbs energies of transfer of peptide backbone units and leucyl side chains from water to denaturant solutions have been calculated. The enthalpies of transfer of the same compounds from water to guanidinium chloride and urea solutions have been determined from calorimetric measurements. Enthalpies of transfer of peptide backbone units and leucyl side chains have been ascertained. The results obtained are of importance for interpretation of Gibbs energies and enthalpies of transfer between the same pairs of solutions observed with proteins. They also provide some insight into the mode of action of the two denaturants.
