Abstract
In the present work, attempts have been made to improve the corrosion resistance of aluminium alloy by sputter-deposition of a titanium coating and then thermal oxidation of the Ti coating–Al substrate system. Electrochemical corrosion tests were conducted potentiostatically in a 3 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution to measure the anodic polarisation curve. The results show that the as-deposited Ti coating can significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of the aluminium alloy in terms of improved pitting corrosion and much reduced corrosion rate. Thermal oxidation of the titanium coating can alleviate the pitting corrosion problem and further reduce the corrosion rate by more than two orders of magnitude over a wide range of potentials.
