Abstract
It is the role of the laboratory to maintain the capability for TDM as appropriate for the patient population it serves and to ensure that testing is performed in a manner that assures quality and cost-effectiveness. Most laboratories can meet local needs for TDM by providing automated tests for determining concentrations of aminoglycosides and vancomycin, and establishing contact with reference laboratories for unusual or infrequent requests. Larger laboratories may also opt to maintain proficiency in particular bioassays and HPLC as determined by the needs of its patient population and abilities. Beyond having the capability to perform tests, it is increasingly important for laboratories to communicate with physician users and to participate in hospital programs of total quality management concerning TDM (17).
