Abstract

Abstract In the present, the engines of the vehicles are optimized to provide the best fuel consumption performance. To reduce fuel consumption, it is very important to use the engine in an operating mode as efficiently as possible. This aspect involves the choosing an optimum tire size, final gear ratio and gearbox type which to works together with the engine, in a good operational point for as much time of the transport load as possible. The low value of the brake specific fuel consumption is obtained by adjusting the engine speed and the load. The paper presents an extensive theoretical study, done with the numerical simulation aid, regarding the fuel consumption performance for a passenger car equipped with a mechanical transmission. The mathematical model was implemented in the Matlab program, using the Simulink extension. The overall objective of the paper is to develop a mathematical model that will be able to simulate the fuel consumption performance of a passenger car. The conclusion of the study shows that the model presented in the article can be used successfully for a quick analysis of the fuel consumption performance as well as for the performance optimization. The model can also be adapted relatively easily for the cars equipped with different transmission types.
